On August 4, 2026, the Karen Education and Culture Department (KECD) conducted a GBV and Child Protection Coordination Meeting to discuss the GBV, Kawthoolei Child Protection and Case Management Guideline. The workshop was held at the KECD Headquarters.

The workshop was attended by representatives from KDHW, KNU-CPC, KLAC, DoJ, KSNG, KTWG, SMRU, DIRA, CIDKP, KWO, MTC, and SNF. A total of 37 participants attended, including 19 males and 18 females.

During the workshop, each organization and department shared their experiences, existing policies, and practices related to child protection. Participants also discussed and provided input on the Kawthoolei Child Protection and Case Management Guideline.

Interview with Thara Saw Kaw Lah, a Teacher at Earth Mission
In this interview, Thara Saw Kaw Lah shared that Earth Mission focuses on health, training youth to work within their communities. The goal is to help isolated communities receive higher-quality medical care and proper treatment.
Regarding the challenges of the 2025–2026 medical year compared to previous years, he noted that this year has been worse due to airstrikes and other external conflicts and crises. These have forced students to change locations, move patients to safer places, and relocate clinics and hospitals. When addressing these problems, villagers have provided support such as building hiding shelters and helping transport patients.
To keep the school running safely, the school building was constructed in the forest, and they work closely with community leaders to communicate better about safety protocols.
He emphasized that students sometimes carry a heavy workload, as they must focus on both academic studies and practical training, and at times must serve overtime (OT). So, he has had to encourage the medical students not to give up.

On August 9, 2026, at 3:58 p.m., the Myanmar junta intentionally dropped a 500-pound bomb on Meh Khu Hkee Village, Bu Tho Township, Mutraw District. The airstrike destroyed Meh Khu Hkee Primary School and severely damaged the school buildings, as well as teaching and learning materials.
Since the coup, attacks by the junta against civilians have continued to escalate, particularly in rural and mountainous areas. These attacks, including terrorization, pressure, and torture, have caused displacement, poverty, hunger, and the disruption of communities’ efforts to improve their livelihoods and living conditions.
For years, villagers have lived with constant fear and concerns for their safety. Despite these challenges, they have continued to prioritize education so that their children can grow with knowledge and skills, including the ability to read and write. They have overcome their fears and worked together to establish learning spaces and schools for their children.
The destruction of their school has therefore become a major disruption for the entire community and represents a significant loss for the children. Beyond the damage to the school building and learning materials, the attack has disrupted the children’s opportunity to learn, develop their knowledge and skills, and their future.

Currently, the Myanmar regime is using different types of military attack strategies, including ground forces, airstrikes, mortar shelling, fighter jets, and drones, to attack and tear villages and communities apart. These attacks happen almost every day in areas where Karen schools, hospitals, religious buildings, and community shelters are located. The attacks have not only happened Karen areas but also occur throughout Myanmar, including other ethnic communities.
On August 10, 2026, at 4:05 p.m., the Burmese military intentionally carried out an airstrike on a village in Ler Doh Township, Kler Lwee Htu District. This unlawful attack killed one student and injured four other students.
The students who lost their lives or were injured in the attacks have left their families facing deep sadness and concern, particularly over the victims’ recovery and medical treatment. Families who have lost their children are experiencing heartbreaking grief and trauma. We share the same feelings of sorrow and concern with the victims’ families. We hope the international community and neighboring countries will help find a way to stop this from happening and provide justice.

He shared that in 2025-2026 academic year there are 79 schools, 708 dedicated teachers, and 15,331 students in the township. Most schools have continued to operate well, but some have been affected by armed conflict and have had to suspend educational activities.
Throughout the year, the education sector has faced several challenges, including armed conflict, transportation difficulties, inflation, and limited teacher stipends. As a result, some teachers have been forced to seek alternative livelihoods to support their families.
Despite these challenges, P'Doh Hser Htee Nay Thaw encouraged teachers to remain committed to educating the next generation and called on educated youth and fresh graduates to join the education sector.

P’Doh Naw Paw Thei Day shared that 422 schools are currently operating with the support of 3,120 teachers, serving 41,931 students.
School operations face several challenges, including both natural and human-made disasters. Natural disasters, such as flooding and heavy rains, made schools unsafe and disrupt education. Human-made disasters, including airstrikes and heavy-weapons shelling, have caused the greatest challenges. These attacks have damaged school buildings and seriously affected the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and staff.
Inflation has also created significant difficulties for teachers and staff in meeting their basic needs. As a result, some teachers have been forced to leave their jobs because they can no longer support themselves and their families.
She mentioned that some students’ parents have had to flee because of the conflict, therefore unable to support their children’s education. Some parents are still able to provide support, but due to safety concerns, they have sent their children to migrant schools or other safer areas to continue their education.
To address these challenges, she shared that the education team encourages both students and teachers to continue their teaching job, continue helping their community. Also establishing safer learning spaces and cooperating closely with students’ parents and local leaders to support education and ensure the safety of children and teachers.
She expressed deep gratitude to the teachers, emphasizing that they are the main pillar of education. Despite the difficult circumstances, teachers continue to provide education, care, well-being, and even protection for children. They sacrifice their own safety and well-being for the education and development of the children and for the hope of building future leaders.

Thara Saw Ta Naw Thu Saw, Principal of Dr. T Thanbyan College and Institute, shared that the college was established in 2014 and offers four-year degree programs, bachelor’s degrees of English, Computer Science, and Business.

According to Thara Saw Ta Naw Thu Saw, the college continues to face many challenges due to ongoing political instability. These challenges have caused difficult transportation, inflation, and reduced motivation among instructors.

To respond to these difficulties, the college works closely with the local community and follows established local safety procedures. While complete safety cannot be guaranteed under the current situation, the college continues to make every effort to protect students, teachers, and staff.

He explained that airstrikes remain one of the most serious security risks facing by the school. To reduce potential risks, the college had sought safe hiding a place and if any unusual news of potential risk occurs the students and staff move to there for their safety.

In response to rising prices and inflation, the college is also carefully managing income and expenditure, and reducing unnecessary spending while maintaining essential educational activities.

Thara Saw Ta Naw Thu Saw encouraged students to remain committed to their education despite the challenges they face. He emphasized that education plays an important role in building a better future for the nation. He encouraged students to work hard and remain determined, regardless of where they live or the circumstances they face, because opportunities can become possible for those who continue to try hard toward their goals.

P’Doh Saw K’Lee Khu, Education Officer of Mutraw District, shared an overview of the current education situation, achievements, and challenges facing schools and communities in the district.
According to him, Mutraw District currently has 327 schools, including 271 primary schools, 42 middle schools, and 14 high schools, serving 27,568 students with the support of 2,254 teachers.
Throughout the academic year, the district education team has implemented activities assigned by the Central Karen Education and Culture Department (KECD), as well as district-level initiatives. These activities include collecting and updating school data, distributing teaching and learning materials, monitoring schools, raising awareness among students and parents, visiting schools to encourage and support teachers, and sharing departmental policies and educational guidance with teachers.
Mutraw District had face serious challenges due to the ongoing conflict. Airstrikes and other attacks have disrupted schooling, forcing some schools to operate in hidden or safer locations to protect students and teachers. In some cases, students have been injured or lost their lives, while school buildings and other educational facilities have been damaged or destroyed.
Despite these difficult circumstances, P’Doh Saw K’Lee Khu emphasized the dedication and resilience of teachers who continue to serve children and communities. He also recognized the determination of students, many of whom continue to work hard and pursue opportunities for further education despite the risks and hardships they face.
He encouraged teachers to remain committed to providing education, regardless of the conditions, and urged students not to give up on their studies because of the challenges caused by conflict.
