Art Thou Non-Continuous?

A long time ago the words "you are" did not exist. Over time, the users of English changed "thou art" to "you are." This is a living, changing language.

Right now English has some verbs that you can't add "-ing" to. We don't say, "She is needing help." We say, "She needs help." These verbs are called NON-CONTINUOUS.

I think we are witness to a very abrupt change in how the language is used. It all started with McDonald's "I'm lovin' it" advertisements. Suddenly, "Wow, I love this pizza!" turned into, "Wow, I'm loving this pizza!"

Ten years ago that continuous use of a non-continuous verb would have sounded quite strange. Now we can often hear a complete abandonment of this rule in movies and television shows, and it no longer sounds unusual.

As opposed to slang like, "Can you dig it?" or, "Totally tubular!" I think this is a permanent, fundamental change in English.

And I say why not?

Non-continuous verbs are verbs that we do not normally use with continuous tenses. These "stative" verbs are about state, not action, and they cannot express the continuous or progressive aspect. Here are some of the most common non-continuous verbs:
