Today's Tip
Today, we are going to highlight how different languages differ in the way they deliver the same meaning.
We have to bear in mind that languages are not identical in more than one way. Today, we are going to draw some examples on how languages are different in terms of structure.
In English, we usually say " I broke my arm" to refer to an accident in which my arm was broken.
In Spanish this structure,"I broke my arm", means that I broke it myself and intentionally , and this is weird and doesn't convey the same meaning.
Another example: " I had my hair cut" This structure refers to the idea that I went to the barber who cut my hair. However, the second sentence is weird and unnatural in English. In some languages like Arabic, the structure is " I cut my hair "
We all agree that the pronoun "I" is the subject, however, it is axiomatic that the barber is the doer of the action even thought he doesn't appear in the sentence.
Here is an example about word usage:
The company will "hire" more employees at the end of the year. The word "hire" in this context means employ. However, such a sentence will look like an insult if translated literally into Arabic.
In nutshell, each language has its own characteristics, structures and ways of delivering meanings; that is why we shouldn't learn one language through another one.
