Numinous Fields explores both modes to show how the sacred can be perceived and experienced in various places – natural, designed, or artistically represented – across a range of cultures, historical periods, and belief systems. It considers the sacred as being always placed, yet ‘place’, real or imagined, manifests its numinosity in numerous ways. It develops a critical framework for further study of the topic.

رأى بعض أصحابي من الطلبة في المنام، ليلة السبت السادس عشر من المحرم، سنة إحدى وتسعين وألف، روحانية الشيخ الأكبر محيي الدين بن العربي قدس الله تعالى سره، ورأى روحانيتي أيضاً معها في مقابلتها، وهو جالس بينهما. فسمع الشيخ الأكبر رضي الله عنه ينشدني من فمه هذين البيتين، فحفظهما من إنشاده. ثم لما استيقظ من واقعته كتبهما وعرضهما علي وهما قوله:

أيا ربة الألحان ديري كؤوسنا -- على من له في الحب أوفر منصب
وحيي أناساً قد شُغفنا بحبهم -- لهم منحة منا وود مقرّب

The conference aims to contribute to an on-going scholarly effort to revise interpretive frameworks in the historiography of Islam. ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi (1641-1731) is a main witness to the early modern endeavor to create a new theology. His attitudes towards political power and his perception of religious pluralism, both within Islam and with regard to other faith traditions, have much to say to the contemporary world. The richness of his literary output, mirroring the multifaceted dimensions of early modern Islamic culture, makes him a catalyst of a renewed historiographical awareness. The conference aims to bring together students of Nabulusi’s thought and legacy to assess the existing literature, to point out gaps in scholarship, and to open up new venues for future research.

شمس المحبة

يقول عبد الكريم الجيلي في مطلع قصيدته العينيّة

فؤاد به شمس المحبة طالع --- وليس لنجم العذل فيه مواقع

يشرح عبد الغني النابلسي البيت قائلاً:

يعني لي فؤاد شمس المحبة الإلهية طالعة فيه، فنجوم الملامة من الأغيار لا تظهر فيه، لأن الشمس إذا طلعت لا تبقي للنجوم ظهور. ومراده بشمس المحبة، رتبة الحق الواردة في الكتاب والسنة، وهي أوصافه الحسنى، لا كُنه ذاته، لأنها واجبة، ولا وجود للممكن معها، فلا ظهور لها فيه، إلا من حيث ما ينبغي أن تكون عليه من المرتبة، ومرتبة الحق هي الكمال الحقيقي، والجمال الصرف، ومن لازم الجمال المحبة... وقال بعد ذلك، وليس لنجم العذل فيه مواقع، وأطلق على الأغيار كلها عذلاء، سواء كانت روحانية أو جسمانية، لأن مع ثبوتها في بصيرة العارف، لا ثبوت للواجب من حيث هو منفرد بالأوصاف الحسنى، ومع ثبوت الواجب في البصيرة وظهور سطوات أوصافية الجلالية والجمالية، لا ثبوت للأغيار بالكلية.
