OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE MIDWIFE 2026
The South Sudan Nurses and Midwives Association (SSNAMA), Western Bahr El Ghazal State – Wau Chapter, proudly joins the global community in commemorating the International Day of the Midwife, celebrated annually on 5th May.
This year’s theme, “One Million More Midwives,” highlights the urgent need to invest in and expand the midwifery workforce worldwide. It is a powerful call to action for governments, partners, and stakeholders to prioritize the training, recruitment, and retention of midwives as a critical step toward improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.
Midwives play a vital role in providing essential, life-saving care to women and newborns, particularly in resource-limited and humanitarian settings such as South Sudan. Increasing the number of qualified midwives will significantly contribute to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, strengthening health systems, and ensuring universal access to quality reproductive, maternal, and newborn health services.
On this important day, SSNAMA Wau Chapter recognizes and appreciates the dedication, resilience, and professionalism of all midwives serving across Western Bahr El Ghazal State and beyond. Your commitment continues to make a profound difference in the lives of mothers, children, and families.
We call upon the Government of South Sudan, development partners, and all relevant stakeholders to invest more in midwifery education, employment, and supportive working conditions to achieve sustainable health outcomes.
Together, let us advocate for “One Million More Midwives” to secure a healthier future for all.
Signed:
Michael Mayen Peter
