LEADERS of holdout groups in the Nairobi peace process, the Tumaini Initiative insist that they have not given up on pressing for a smaller government in Juba.

In a press statement delivered today, the leaders declared that the reorganisation of the government is not "a thing of the past" as stated by the Government delegation in a press conference last Friday.

"We have not conceded on the demand for a lean government because the country is bankrupt, and the people of South Sudan cannot afford this bloated government," reads the statement.

The statement was signed by Pagan Amum, Leader of Real-SPLM, Paul Malong Awan, Chairman of the South Sudan United Front/Army, Stephen Bouy Rolnyang, Chairman of the South Sudan People's Movement/Army and Mario Loku Thomas Jada of the NAS - Revolutionary Command Council.

The opposition leaders also expressed disappointment with the announcement of the 22nd of December as election day by the National Elections Commission. They labelled it as "an act of bad faith," and a disregard for binding agreements.

The opposition groups also weighed in on parliament's passing of the controversial National Security Service Act (Amendment ) Bill, 2024 last week. They allege that parliament was intimidated to giving arbitrary powers to the National Security Service.

"The democratic gains made by the people of South Sudan through the 2011 Referendum and Declaration of Independence, the ideals our people fought for have all been quashed using the National Security Service," they stated.
