Saint Josephine Bakhita Minor Seminary - Mapuordit.
St. Josephine Bakhita Minor Seminary Celebrate the Jubilee of Seminarians under the theme: “Here I am,” I said; “send me!” I pilgrim of hope.
The year 2025 is an extraordinary year of grace, a holy year proclaimed by the Holy Father Pope Francis, calling all the faithful to reflect on the theme: Pilgrims of Hope. This theme inspires us to journey in faith, trust and hope, offering to each one of us a spiritual enrichment and a deeper encounter with Christ.
The notion of “Jubilee” has its origin in the Book of Leviticus chapter 25. In addition, the word Jubilee comes from the Hebrew word “YOVEL”, which means the “horn of a RAM, TRUMPET. The word “Yovel” became Jubilee in English taken from the Latin word “Jubilaeus”, or “Jubilare” which means, “to shout with Joy” and that is the reason for using this word in a manner of celebration or a party.
In ancient Judaism, the Jubilee Year which was called the Year of “YOBEL”, horn of the goat, because the holiday was proclaimed by the sound of a goat’s horn was a year that was declared holy.
In the New Testament, Jesus’ ministry is presented as the fulfilment of the Old Testament Year of Jubilee. The Gospel of Luke 4:16-21, records Jesus declaring that he is fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 61: 1-3: which includes the proclamation of the “Year of Lord’s favor”, a direct reference to Jubilee. This signifies a time of release, restoration, and Freedom for God’s people, both physically and spiritually.
In the history of the Church, Pope Boniface, the VII for the first time proclaimed the first ordinary Jubilee in 1,300. Throughout the Christian world at that time there was great suffering caused by wars and diseases such as plague and all kinds of illnesses: among the people, there was a great desire to return to a more holy way of living.
So, with great faith the Christians of that time were determined to travel on foot to Rome, to pray at the tombs of the Apostles Peter and Paul, to receive the Pope’s blessing in order to obtain the grace and strength to carry on with the challenges of life. They came in thousands at Christmas Eve in 1299. Due to their great number of pilgrims, the Pope having inquire and learned the motive for their coming, full of admiration for their faith proclaimed a “Year of forgiveness of all their sins”.
With gratitude to God and to the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, we the Seminarians of Saint Josephine Bakhita Minor Seminary are today celebrating the Jubilee of Seminarians. This Jubilee is an important event in the history of the Catholic Church and for us Seminarians who are in the process of discernment on our journey to Priesthood. We understand that the purpose of this Jubilee is to offer us a deep experience of faith, and to be in communion with all the seminarians around the world. During our nine (9) days of novena, we prayed and reflected on deepening our commitment to our vocational journey in the seminary.
Seminary is a “seed bed” or a place where the church cultivates leaders in Faith. The young men in the seminary are Seminarians. They are students who are studying in order to become priests in the Catholic Church. The Formation in the Seminary develops through four pillars: Human, Spiritual, intellectual and pastoral. At the heart of these lies, the opportunity for those called to discern more deeply, whom God has called to be send. “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” (Isaiah 6: 8).
We thank Fr. George Duk the Parish priest of St. Josephine Bakhita Parish Mapuordit for lead us in 9 days of Novena and conclude it with Monthly Recollection.
May God bless us all!
