The land we now call South Sudan has a history that stretches back thousands of years, long before modern borders were drawn. Together with Sudan, it was part of some of Africaโ€™s most ancient and powerful civilisations, including the Kingdom of Kush, which thrived along the Nile River as early as 2500 BCE. This kingdom, renowned for its wealth, powerful rulers, and influence, was closely connected to Ancient Egypt, with cultural exchanges and even shared rulers during certain periods.

The history of this land wasnโ€™t just shaped by the North. While the Kingdom of Kush was centred more in what is now northern Sudan, its reach extended southward, impacting the lives and cultures of those in the southern regions. Over the centuries, both northern and southern Sudan were part of various empires and trading networks that connected them with Africa, the Middle East, and beyond. This ancient history is still visible today through the ruins, pyramids, and cultural legacies found across both Sudan and South Sudan.

In more modern times, Sudan including what is now South Sudan fell under the control of the Ottoman Empire, and later the British-Egyptian rule, which shaped the political and social landscape of the region. When Sudan achieved independence in 1956, both the North and South found themselves navigating a new era, but tensions quickly arose due to ethnic, cultural, and religious differences, particularly between the northern and southern regions.

These tensions led to decades of civil conflict, culminating in South Sudanโ€™s independence on July 9, 2011, marking a new chapter in the history of our land. While we proudly stand as the worldโ€™s newest nation, itโ€™s important to remember that our roots run deep. The shared history between Sudan and South Sudan spans thousands of years, with both regions contributing to the rich tapestry of cultures, trade, and civilisations along the mighty Nile River.

As we move forward as a sovereign nation, we carry with us the ancient legacy of this land one of resilience, strength, and deep historical significance. Letโ€™s celebrate our journey and honour the history that has shaped South Sudan today.
