🇸🇷 Celebrating Our Heritage, Diversity and Shared Future
Today, 9 August 2026, Suriname commemorates two important chapters of our rich and diverse national heritage: Indigenous Peoples’ Day and 136 years of Javanese Immigration in Suriname.
On this special day, we honor our Indigenous Peoples, the first custodians of this land, whose ancestral knowledge, traditions and profound relationship with nature continue to enrich Suriname.
We equally recognize the Javanese community, whose arrival in Suriname in 1890 became the beginning of generations of invaluable contributions to our agriculture, culture, cuisine, economy and national development.
Although these communities have distinct histories and traditions, today reminds us of something they—and indeed all Surinamese—share: the right to preserve their identity and heritage, to participate fully in society, and to live together in dignity, harmony, equality and peace.
This message takes on additional significance as we commemorate the IX Inter-American Week for Indigenous Peoples, under the theme:
“Roots that Sustain, Knowledge that Transforms.”
The theme reminds us that heritage is not simply something inherited from previous generations. It is living knowledge that must be respected, protected and passed on. Indigenous knowledge of the land, forests, food systems and crops such as cassava demonstrates how ancestral wisdom can contribute to modern challenges including food security, climate resilience and sustainable development.
Suriname's strength has always been found in its remarkable diversity. Our Indigenous, Javanese, Maroon, Hindustani, Chinese, Creole and other communities have each contributed threads to the fabric of the nation we share.
May this day therefore be more than a celebration. May it renew our commitment to a Suriname where cultural diversity is respected, fundamental rights are protected, and every community has the opportunity to develop while preserving the identity that makes it unique.
Peaceful coexistence does not require us to become the same. It asks us to respect our differences while recognizing our common humanity and our shared responsibility for the country we call home.
Warm congratulations to the Indigenous Peoples of Suriname and to the Javanese-Surinamese community on this meaningful day.
