On May 23, 2026, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo, in collaboration with Stichting Alzheimer Suriname, hosted an impactful seminar titled “How to Handle Problematic Behavior in Dementia.” This event served as a vital platform for raising awareness and providing essential insights for families navigating the complexities of dementia care.

Attendees were welcomed by Dr. K. Luckham, a distinguished clinical geriatrician, who shared her expertise on managing challenging behaviors without relying solely on medication. Her engaging presentation not only highlighted the emotional and psychological aspects of dementia but also empowered families to implement practical strategies in their daily lives.

The seminar fostered a sense of community, allowing participants to share their experiences and connect with others facing similar challenges. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn and discuss the nuances of caregiving, emphasizing the need for ongoing support and understanding.

A Wonderful Visit to Radiology Clinic Halfhide!

The Rotary Club of Paramaribo received a warm welcome from our loyal fellow Rotarian, Ben Halfhide, who runs the radiology clinic named after him.

Ben gave us an extensive tour and shared his journey in medicine—from his studies at the University of Suriname to his specialization in radiology in the Netherlands. His passion and dedication are truly inspiring!

We are grateful for Ben's hospitality and look forward to seeing the impact of his work in our community.

Reform of the Judiciary System in Suriname: A Crucial Step Towards Modernization

On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Hugo Fernandes Mendes gave an engaging lecture at the Rotary Club of Paramaribo about the important constitutional reforms of the judiciary in Suriname.

Topics such as the establishment of a Surinamese Supreme Court, another new chamber of the court and a college of public prosecutors were discussed. These proposals are crucial for the modernization of our justice system, especially given the outdated organizational law from 1868.

Fernandes Mendes emphasized the importance of a balanced relationship between the judiciary, legislative, and executive powers for maintaining our democracy. The concerning position of the constitutional court was also extensively discussed.

This subject is more relevant than ever and raises many questions in our society. Let’s re-think the future of the judiciary in Suriname!
