Gender violence
Gender-based violence refers to harmful acts directed against a person or a group of people because of their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, abuse of power and the existence of harmful norms. The term is primarily used to highlight the fact that structural power differences based on gender place women and girls at risk of multiple forms of violence. While women and girls disproportionately experience gender-based violence, men and boys can also be targeted. This term is sometimes used to describe violence directed against LGBTQI+ populations, referring to violence related to masculinity/femininity norms or gender norms.
