Zamzam University of Science and Technology and SONAD Sign MoU to Advance Inclusive Higher Education and Digital Inclusion in Somalia
Mogadishu, Somalia – 15 September 2026
Zamzam University of Science and Technology (ZUST) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Somali National Association of the Deaf (SONAD), establishing a framework for cooperation to expand educational opportunities, digital inclusion, skills development, research, and innovation for deaf and hard-of-hearing communities in Somalia.
Under the MoU, ZUST and SONAD will collaborate in areas including inclusive education, research, capacity building and professional skills development, awareness and community engagement, and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). Particular attention will be given to exploring accessible technologies and systems that can reduce communication and learning barriers for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
The rector emphasized that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that higher education is accessible and inclusive, particularly for communities that continue to encounter barriers to learning, communication, technology, and meaningful participation in society. - Mohamud M. Hassan Harbi, Rector, ZUST
The partnership will promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). It will also provide a platform for joint research and innovation addressing the needs and experiences of Somalia's deaf community. This includes exploring how AI and other digital technologies can support accessible learning resources, communication tools, Somali Sign Language-related solutions, and greater participation in education and employment.
