Our latest research highlights the importance of adopting an integrated approach to food production in Somalia. The research finds that sustainable fisheries, industrial development, and strong institutions significantly enhance food production, while income inequality undermines long-term food security. The study calls for coordinated investments in fisheries, agro-industrial development, governance, and inclusive policies to build a resilient and sustainable food system for Somalia.

Climate change in Somalia is not just an environmental issue; it is a development, economic, governance, and human security challenge. Our new briefing paper, "State of Climate in Somalia 2026", presents a sobering but necessary picture of the realities facing the country: recurring droughts, destructive floods, shrinking forests, water scarcity, food insecurity, and mounting economic losses. But beyond the crisis, the paper calls for a strategic shift! Read the paper: https://bit.ly/3PtszJ2

Mohamed Okash, Director of the Institute of Climate and Environment (ICE Institute) at SIMAD University, participated in the Future of Development Co-operation Conference hosted by the OECD in Paris, joining global policymakers, researchers, and development leaders in discussions on the future of international development systems.
The conference explored how development co-operation must evolve in response to geopolitical fragmentation, climate pressures, shrinking aid budgets, technological disruption, and growing demands for measurable impact. Key discussions emphasized the need for stronger local institutional capabilities, locally led development, improved accountability systems, collective AI integration, and more adaptive development financing models.
The discussions also highlighted an emerging global concern that development institutions are producing more data and analysis than ever before, but many systems still struggle to translate evidence into effective action, institutional learning, and long-term impact. Experts stressed that the future of development co-operation will increasingly depend on collaboration, country ownership, interoperable systems, and investments in both human and institutional capacities.
As part of these global conversations, SIMAD University continues to contribute perspectives from Somalia and fragile contexts on climate adaptation, systems transformation, and locally led development solutions for a more sustainable future.
