2025 Global Report on Food Crises: Rising food insecurity, waning humanitarian assistance The world faces a stark inflection point.

The recent restructuring and significant funding cuts by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) are poised to have profound implications across various sectors in African countries.

Health Sector

USAID has been instrumental in combating diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis in Africa. The abrupt cessation of funding, particularly to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has disrupted the delivery of antiretroviral therapies and other essential health services. This disruption threatens to reverse years of progress in controlling these diseases, potentially leading to increased infection rates and mortality. Christian evangelical organizations have expressed concern over these cuts, emphasizing the risk of a resurgence of AIDS in regions where it had been previously controlled.

Economic Development and Employment

USAID's support extends to agricultural productivity, economic growth, and job creation initiatives. The funding reductions have led to the suspension of numerous programs, resulting in widespread job losses. In Ethiopia, for instance, the government introduced a new tax to compensate for the financial void left by the funding pause, aiming to sustain projects previously supported by USAID. The loss of income for many has had a ripple effect, affecting families' ability to afford education and healthcare. This economic strain could exacerbate poverty levels and hinder overall economic development.

Governance and Stability

USAID has played a crucial role in promoting democratic governance, transparency, and accountability in various African nations. The reduction in funding jeopardizes these efforts, potentially leading to weakened governance structures and increased corruption. This shift could result in greater instability and conflicts, ultimately costing more in the long run.

Humanitarian Assistance

The U.S. has been a major contributor to humanitarian aid globally, with USAID providing critical support during natural disasters, conflicts, and other crises. The funding cuts have led to the suspension of emergency food assistance and other life-saving programs, exacerbating human suffering and displacement. The abrupt disruption of aid is perceived as a signal to vulnerable populations that their survival is at risk.

Geopolitical Dynamics

The reduction in U.S. aid could create a vacuum that might be filled by other global powers, such as China and Russia, which are increasingly active on the continent. This shift could alter geopolitical dynamics and diminish U.S. influence in the region. Critics warn that the reductions will harm vulnerable populations and could lead to greater instability and conflicts, ultimately benefiting adversaries.

In collaboration with . we've conducted the validation of the & Development curriculum. By bringing together education & institutional experts, we've crafted a curriculum that aims to be relevant and optimal for inspiring youth and fostering childcare

We were honored to collaborate with the School of Social Works at the University of Hargeisa in facilitating a crucial consultation workshop. The workshop focused on reviewing the first draft of the National Childcare and Youth Development training curriculum, a significant step toward shaping the future of our youth.

Participants included key government ministries such as MESAF (Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs, and Family), the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of National Development and Planning. Their valuable insights will contribute to a comprehensive and effective curriculum.
Representatives from the School of Social Works at private universities in Hargeisa and the dedicated team from SOS Children's Village of Somaliland also joined forces to make this workshop a diverse and impactful event.
The discussions and feedback gathered during the workshop will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of childcare and youth development in Somaliland.
