Ending FGM in the Eastern Mediterranean Region means:
🔹 Ending a form of violence against women and girls
🔹 Lifting a life-threatening burden affecting women and girls in 5 countries across the Region

FGM causes serious health harms, including:
🩸 severe pain and blood loss
🩸 difficulty urinating and infections
🩸 mental health disorders
🩸 pain during sexual in*******se

Ending FGM also means ending violations of:
⚖️ Human rights – FGM is a form of gender discrimination
👧🏾 Children’s rights – FGM is practiced on girls without consent
🍃 The right to life – FGM can be fatal

What must be done?

👩🏾‍⚕️👨🏾‍⚕️ Health workers should:
❌ Refuse to perform FGM
👨‍👩‍👧 Engage parents and communities to stop the practice
🤗 Support women and girls affected by FGM

🏛️ Governments should:
🗒️ Engage communities
🩺 Train health workers
⚖️ Enact and enforce anti-FGM laws
💰 Invest in prevention
