Day 2 of the AAUN Conference 2026

The Amoud University Research and Innovation Center is immensely proud to extend its warmest congratulations to our Senior Administrator and Director of HRM, Ms. Yurub Abdirahman Mumin, and her esteemed co-authors for the publication of their insightful study, "Beyond the license: capital, kinship, and the limits of formalization in Somali household enterprises," in the prestigious Taylor & Francis journal, Cogent Business & Management.

This unique study provides a novel and vital perspective on the Somali economy, challenging the traditional "formalization hypothesis." By examining what truly drives profitability in 800 non-agricultural household enterprises, the research offers a powerful policy shift: arguing that instead of burdening small businesses with tax registration, governments and donors should prioritize access to loans, infrastructure, and practical support.

As a two-time alumna of Amoud University, Ms. Yurub is a living testament to the quality and spirit of our institution. She embodies the "Amoudian spirit"—reflecting our vision, mission, and core values. Through her charismatic leadership, enthusiastic pursuit of personal growth, and significant contributions to the communities of Amoud, Borama, and Somaliland at large, she has become a role model for generational aspirations. 1. The Formalization Myth: The study finds no significant link between legal registration and increased profitability in fragile states, suggesting that a business license is often an administrative hurdle without a corresponding benefit.

2. The Kinship Advantage: In low-trust environments with weak contract enforcement, family labor provides a competitive efficiency advantage over hired labor by significantly reducing "agency costs."

3. Policy Shift: The research advocates for a "capability-based" approach, urging policymakers to focus on financial inclusion and infrastructure rather than mere regulatory compliance.

The conference brings together more than 170 delegates from Africa and Australia, including university leaders, researchers, policymakers, and development partners, to strengthen academic collaboration, research partnerships, innovation, and sustainable development.

A major highlight of this year's conference will be the official announcement of Amoud University's full membership in the Australia-Africa Universities Network (AAUN), marking a significant milestone in the University's internationalization strategy and its commitment to expanding global academic networks and partnerships.
