Education Minister Conrad Sackey has announced tougher measures to monitor teacher attendance across Sierra Leone.

Teachers who remain absent from their assigned schools for six consecutive terms without following the proper disciplinary process could reportedly be removed from the government payroll.

The Ministry is also introducing β€œWe Day Ya”, a digital system using fingerprints, GPS and tablets to track teachers’ attendance.

The aim is to improve accountability and ensure teachers are available for their students. πŸŽ“πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡±

Education Minister reaffirms government’s commitment to fighting exams malpractice

Hon. Conrad Sackey - Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education has reaffirmed Government’s commitment to protecting the integrity of Sierra Leone’s education system, particularly in the fight against examination malpractice.

Speaking at a Special Edition Civic Town Hall at the Miatta Civic Centre in Freetown, Minister Sackey clarified issues surrounding the recently released NPSE results.

More than 160,000 candidates, approximately 161,000, sat the examination, recording a 78.2% pass rate.

Minister Sackey explained that the 1,927 withheld results should not be interpreted as cases of examination malpractice. He disclosed that approximately 1,640 results were withheld because the schools involved had failed to submit the required continuous assessment cards.

According to the Minister, alleged examination malpractice cases accounted for only about 0.2% of candidates who sat the NPSE.

He also disclosed several measures being introduced to strengthen examination management, including a new White Paper on education, civic education and public awareness campaigns, as well as increased use of digital technology to identify suspicious examination patterns.

Minister Sackey said digital systems could analyse more than 300,000 pieces of data to detect duplication and other irregularities.

He further revealed that 58 principals had previously been suspended for one year without pay over examination-related offences, while other cases remain under investigation.

The Minister stressed that examination malpractice is not solely a pupils’ issue, but involves a wider network including parents, teachers and other actors.

He called for a collective national effort involving Government, teachers, parents, pupils, civil society, the media and other stakeholders to safeguard the credibility of Sierra Leone’s education system.
