The UniMak Debating Council held a successful Hon. Ibrahim Barrie essay writing and Spoken word poetry competition at the university of Makeni.
The theme surrounds environmental protection and the fight against climate injustice. This theme was inspired by the sponsor’s passion for sustainable development and climate justice.
Honorable Ibrahim Barrie is an esteemed member of the Sierra Leone parliament, representing Bombali district. Throughout his involvement at the well of parliament to date, in parliamentary debates, he has constantly advocated for sustainable macroeconomic policies for national development.
In his words, it’s his responsibility to support young people to make valuable contribution towards national development and the rule of law.
Hon. Barrie is a lecturer at the political science and international relations department, the Development Studies department, and the Masters class in Sustainable Development.
Winners of this annual competition were awarded for their valuable participation in both the essay writing competition and spoken word poetry competition.

1st Runner up- Dauda Usif Kanu
The ideas shared in this competition will be made known to the general public through community engagements and peer to peer engagement as part of the sustainability plan for climate action and the fought towards climate justice.

Appreciating Our University Orator
The UniMak Debating Council, on behalf of the university administration, is proud to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Abdulai Barrie, the university’s Orator, for his outstanding performance at the recent speech delivery competition on Anti-Money Laundering and Financial Theft held in Liberia.
We are pleased to inform the student body that Mr. Barrie, representing our university, competed against several African nations, including Ghana, Nigeria, and The Gambia, and emerged with an impressive 4th place finish. This remarkable achievement is a testament to his dedication, skill, and passion for promoting the values of our institution on the global stage as our current orator.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Barrie for his tireless efforts and commitment in bringing recognition to the university wherever he goes. His success reflects the strength of our oratory program and the calibre of talent nurtured within our academic community.
We also wish to express our gratitude to the university administration for their unwavering support, particularly to our coaches, Mr. Paul Kamara Esq. and Mr. Shebora Samba Kamara, whose guidance has been instrumental to our successes as a council. Greetings,
We hope this message finds you well.
In response to recent inquiries and requests for clarification regarding the Hon. Ibrahim Barrie Essay Writing and Spoken Word Poetry Competition, we would like to make the following important announcements and amendments.
*1. Date Clarification:*
Please disregard the initial flyer that mentioned a date in 2025. The correct date for the Spoken Word Poetry competition, which will also serve as the announcement of the Essay Writing competition winners and the award ceremony, is *December 13, 2024*.
*2. Essay Writing Competition:*
We wish to remind participants of the following updated guidelines for the Essay Writing competition:
- The word limit for essays is *between 1,000 and 1,500 words*.
- The style of writing should be *strictly academic*.
- Essays should be submitted in *PDF format*, either as a scanned copy of your handwritten work or a typed version. Please send your submission to the official email address: *[email protected]*.
- The *deadline for submission* is *December 8, 2024*.
*3. Poetry Competition:*
We have also made important changes to the Spoken Word Poetry competition:
- The competition is now open to *all students* of the university, rather than being limited to seven participants from each of the seven faculties.
- Interested participants should send their written poems, based on the chosen theme, to the same email address: *[email protected]*.
- A panel of reputable and experienced poets will review all submissions and select the top seven poems. The finalists will have the opportunity to perform their spoken word pieces at the competition finals, which will take place at the UniMak canteen on *December 13, 2024*.
- The *deadline for submission of written poems* is *December 8, 2024*.
*Please Note:* Participants are allowed to enter *only one category*, either the Essay Writing competition or the Poetry competition, but not both.

The UniMak Debating Council is pleased to announce the Hon. Ibrahim Barrie Essay and Spoken Word Poetry Competition. This annual competition honors Hon. Ibrahim Barrie, a distinguished Member of Parliament, educator, and advocate for youth empowerment in Sierra Leone. The competition celebrates his legacy by nurturing the intellectual and creative talents of the nation’s youth.
This competition aims to honor Hon. Ibrahim Barrie’s legacy while providing a platform for young voices to engage with critical issues such as sustainability and environmental protection. We encourage all students to participate and express their ideas creatively.

UniMak Debating Council hosts day one of British Parliamentary System Debate, Public Speaking, and Poetry training in preparation for the "Anthony Navo Jnr Interdepartmental Debate, Public Speaking, and Poetry Competition 2024." This training aims to cultivate high-quality and constructive intellectual dialogue among participants ahead of the competition starting on May 2nd, 2024.

UniMak Debating Council recently collaborated with the Development Studies and Procurement, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management departments for their intra-departmental debate, public speaking, and poetry competitions. The past three days have been both hectic and rewarding for us, thanks to our dedicated team members who supported us every step of the way.
We want to reassure the entire student body of our unwavering commitment to enhancing the art of public speaking within the university. Moreover, we aim to address significant challenges facing our country, advocating for positive transformation through our activities.
