Crane Operating – More Than Just Control
Operating a crane is not just about basic control. It is a highly skilled and complex operation that demands full coordination of hands, eyes, and mind—every second counts 🧠🤝👀.

A crane operator must control multiple functions at the same time using two joysticks: opening and closing the grab, hoisting and lowering the load, raising and lowering the boom, and rotating or positioning the crane with precision 🎮⚙️.

Each movement must be smooth, controlled, and perfectly timed.
Constant alertness is critical, especially when swinging the grab, as even a small misjudgment can cause damage, operational delays, or serious safety risks ⚠️.

The operator must continuously read load behavior, sea conditions, vessel movement, and surroundings all at once 🌊🚢.

Onboard Conakry Pearl, equipped with a 70-ton SWL heavy-duty crane, the level of responsibility is even higher. Handling such a powerful machine requires experience, calm judgment, and high competence 💪⚓.

Today, let’s learn about the main equipment we use for chipping and rust removal onboard ships — an essential part of deck maintenance 🧰🛠️

🔧 Manual Tools – Simple but Effective

The chipping hammer 🔨 is used to knock off rust and old paint.
The scraper 🪚 helps clean rough edges and loose paint,
and the wire brush 🧹 gives the final touch to remove small rust flakes and dust.

⚙️ Pneumatic / Power Tools – Faster, Heavy-Duty Work

The pneumatic chipping hammer and needle gun 💥 work on compressed air to clean larger areas quickly.
The angle grinder ⚡ smooths the surface using a wire wheel or grinding disc,
and the deck scaler is ideal for large flat deck sections ⚓🛳️

💦 Advanced Cleaning Methods

For advanced cleaning, we have hydro blasting 💧 — using high-pressure water to remove rust, paint, and salt without dust.
And for deep rust layers, sand blasting 🏗️ is used — it shoots fine sand particles to clean the metal completely.
