Our commitment to certify all teachers and head teachers who participated in implementing the Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge (SLEIC) project has been fulfilled. NYAF partnered with the Deputy Directors of the Teaching Service Commission, Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, and the Local Councils in Moyamba, Bonthe, and Pujehun to implement this activity. The primary objectives of the programme were:
· To officially hand over the certificates to the deputy directors of MBSSE.TSC and local council
· To distribute certificates to head teachers and teachers
· To share the data of NYAF distance education scholarship teachers with TSC and MBSSE in each district
· To share the Lead FLN research report with support from the Global School Leaders
The deputy directors (who were also certified by NYAF), before the handing over of the certificates, expressed their gratitude to the National Youth Awareness Forum for complementing government efforts by providing distance education scholarships and structured in-service professional development for teachers and school leaders.

National Youth Awareness Forum participation in the Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge project enabled us to scale the Whole School Development Model across 67 schools in Bonthe, Moyamba, and Pujehun, in partnership with KIZAZI.
One of the contextual challenges during the implementation of the three-year project was the high number of untrained and unqualified teachers in the schools, with increasing disparity the further into the interior.
To sustain the SLEIC gains, we have provided distance education scholarships (fourth cohort) for 67 untrained and unqualified teachers in the SLEIC schools for the 2025/2026 through 2027/2028 academic years to pursue the Teachers’ Certificate and Higher Teachers’ Certificate programmes. However, priority was given to female teachers.
We are grateful to our partners at the Rockdale Foundation, the Teaching Service Commission, and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education in Bonthe, Moyamba, and Pujehun for their collective responsibility in providing this support.
At NYAF, we believe the quality of the education system depends on the quality of the teachers who deliver the content. What teachers and head teachers know and can do to promote students’ learning outcomes is the driving force of our work. We believed one of the sustainable ways to get qualified, competent, and committed teachers to serve in remote school communities is through distance education scholarships.
To promote FLN, every child deserves the best teacher, regardless of who they are or where they are. @

With support from the Global School Leaders , the National Youth Awareness Forum Sierra Leone (NYAF-SL), and EducAid Sierra Leone, implemented research designed to understand how school leader-focused FLN programmes impact learning outcomes. NYAF implemented the Video-based approach while EducAid implemented the workshop-based. The participating school leaders found the strategy inspiring and educative, further strengthening their capacities to support FLN development. We look forward to learning and sharing the results of the research as soon as the endline data is available.

NYAF and KIZAZI Team Cross River Wanjei to Reach Boma Community, Demonstrating Commitment to Remote Education
In a remarkable show of dedication to reaching underserved communities, a team from the National Youth and Adult Foundation (NYAF) and KIZAZI embarked on a challenging journey to Boma Community, navigating the River Wanjei to engage with residents and support education initiatives in the remote area.
The journey, marked by the crossing of the river, highlights the unwavering commitment of NYAF and KIZAZI to ensuring that even the most isolated communities have access to quality education and development programs. Upon arrival, the team engaged with community members, educators, and local leaders to discuss strategies for improving learning opportunities and strengthening community participation in education.
This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to bridge educational gaps in hard-to-reach areas, reinforcing the belief that no child should be left behind due to geographical barriers. The visit to Boma Community serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of organizations working to transform education in Sierra Leone’s rural regions.
