MEETING REPORT WITH THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF THE FREETOWN CITY COUNCIL

Today, under the directive of the Mayor, the Executive of the Department of Information Studies and Knowledge Management (DISKM) met with the Education Department of the Freetown City Council for a preliminary discussion, led by the Deputy Education Officer, Mr. Collins Pearce.

We were warmly welcomed by the department. The meeting commenced with Mr. Pearce introducing himself and his colleague. He informed us that the Mayor is currently out of town but had instructed the Education Department to engage us in an initial discussion. He further assured us that the Mayor is eagerly looking forward to meeting with the Executive upon her return.

Following his remarks, Miss Lydia Franstacia John, President of the Department of Information Studies and Knowledge Management, introduced herself and the Executive members present. She gave a detailed overview of the Department, its mandate, and its relevance to the operations of the Council.

Miss John highlighted the importance of establishing a partnership and collaboration between DISKM and the Council. She emphasized the need for internship opportunities for students, particularly in areas related to the management of government records and information, which aligns closely with the Councilโ€™s core functions. She noted that such collaboration would be mutually beneficial to both institutions.

Furthermore, she proposed a symposium partnership between the Department and the Council. As a department that trains future information professionals, she stressed the importance of students providing accurate and reliable information to the public. To support this goal, she suggested a joint symposium where the Department would partner with the Mayorโ€™s Office, with the Mayor serving as a key speaker to educate students on the purpose of the Mayorship and the roles and responsibilities it entails.

The meeting was productive and ended on a positive note. Mr. Pearce confirmed that the next engagement will be with the Mayor herself, and he assured us that he would brief her thoroughly on all points discussed.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Miss Kumba Kamanor, Organising Secretary of the DISKM Studentsโ€™ Executive, who expressed appreciation to the officers for their valuable time and efforts.
