Fourth Grade Student Junus Thomas from The American Montessori Leadership Academy Wins First Place in Mandarin Oral Competition

– In a remarkable display of linguistic talent, Junus Thomas a 4th-grade student emerged victorious in the Mandarin Oral Competition organized by the Confucius Institute in Sierra Leone. This prestigious event, held last week, showcased the impressive Mandarin speaking abilities of young learners from across the country.

The highlight of the competition was undoubtedly the stellar performance by the young champion, whose articulation and fluent Mandarin wowed the judges and audience alike. His dedication and hard work in mastering one of the world’s most challenging languages were evident as he confidently delivered his speech, securing first place in the competition.

The event concluded with a special award ceremony where the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone presented the student and his mother with a return ticket to China. This extraordinary prize not only recognizes the student’s outstanding achievement but also provides an invaluable opportunity for further cultural and educational enrichment. The student will now have the honor of representing Sierra Leone in an international Mandarin competition to be held in China.

Expressing her joy and pride, the student’s mother highlighted the significance of this achievement for their family and the broader community. She praised her son’s determination and the support provided by the Confucius Institute, which played a pivotal role in nurturing his language skills.

This victory marks a significant milestone in promoting Mandarin education in Sierra Leone and underscores the growing cultural ties between Sierra Leone and China. The Confucius Institute continues to play a vital role in fostering these connections, offering programs that encourage cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

As the young student prepares for the international competition, his success serves as an inspiration to his peers, demonstrating the possibilities that arise from dedication and passion for learning. “WE EAT WHAT WE GROW”
Prep five(5) pupils at AMLA went to the school’s garden to harvest the Krain Krain that they had planted a few weeks ago. They then prepared something palatable themselves in the school’s kitchen area.

It was a fun experience for them as they learnt real-life skills and techniques whilst they prepared the dish with assistance from the class teacher.

On Friday 26th April 2024, AMLA had its Annual Civic Educational Day at the school grounds.
The pupils learnt about various histories from previous prominent leaders to the current president of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
They were educated about the rich history of Sierra Leone’s Coat of Arms, and The National Flag and what each colour stands for.

Songs were sung in different tribes by the school choir. They also did a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem of Sierra Leone.

The school’s theatre group entertained us with wonderful performances.

The kids had the opportunity to see the different currencies that have been used throughout the years by the Head Teacher who was fortunate to be present in 1961 when Sierra Leone gained its independence from the then-British Monarch.

The event was amazing and we are anticipating another thrilling Civic Educational Day next academic year.
