🦠 Hantavirus and Ebola: Strengthening Preparedness for Emerging Outbreaks

As climate change, rapid population growth, increased mobility, expanding human-animal interactions, and environmental changes continue to reshape our world, the risk of emerging infectious diseases—including Ebola, Hantavirus, mpox, and COVID-19—continues to rise.

The devastating impacts of the 2014–2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic remind us that preparedness must come before crisis. Building resilient health systems and informed communities is essential to protecting lives and livelihoods.

This webinar will provide a platform for knowledge sharing and expert discussion on preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery from Ebola, Hantavirus, and other emerging epidemic threats. Together, we can strengthen regional capacity through science, collaboration, and proactive action.

Still reflecting on our 2nd Africa Liberation Day (ALD)Symposium. Closing the event, Professor Papa N’jai challenged participants to restore Africa’s dignity and sovereignty by embracing indigenous systems and home-grown solutions.

Highlighting Africa’s vast natural wealth alongside the paradox of persistent poverty, he called for a “FUBU” (For Us, By Us) approach—building confidence in African-led solutions and drawing inspiration from success stories like Botswana and Rwanda. Africa’s future must be built by Africans, for Africans.

This weekend, our Principal, Dr. Alhaji U Njai, joined students,staff and community volunteers at the Koinadugu College main campus in a meaningful tree-planting exercise—an investment in the future of our environment and our communities.

Together, we planted over 400 Acacia trees, known for their resilience, natural boundary-forming ability, and resistance to fire. More than just trees, they represent our shared commitment to environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Real change begins with simple actions. Every tree planted today is a promise of a greener, stronger, and more sustainable tomorrow.

Together, we are not just planting trees—we are growing hope. 🌱💚

Planting trees at Koinadugu College is our favorite way to welcome the rainy season each year 🌱🌧️

Today, we planted over 300 cashew trees at one of our college agricultural sites—each one carefully nurtured by both staff and students over the past year.

Whether in large numbers or small, every seed we plant is a step toward a greener future. Where nature meets nurture, growth truly begins.

At our 2nd ALD Symposium, Mr. Usifu Jalloh, storyteller and social change advocate, spoke on “Transformative Storytelling: A Key to African Development.” He highlighted how African narratives can drive business and entrepreneurship, citing Harry Potter as an example of storytelling’s economic power.

He urged Africans to re-examine and elevate local culture—pointing to products like black soap and Sierra Leonean textiles such as ronko—and to preserve traditions like the Balanji and Sampa dance. His message was clear: owning and promoting our stories is essential to achieving true independence and dignity.
