In 1756, when Henry Laurens managed the sale of captives brought by the slave ship Hare, he faced a significant dilemma. The captives, who had endured the horrific conditions of the Middle Passage from Sierra Leone to Charles Towne, South Carolina, were in poor health upon arrival. Laurens' own correspondence reveals that he was acutely aware of their weakened state, as many of them were malnourished and suffering from the physical toll of the grueling transatlantic voyage.

Despite these challenges, the economic pressures of the time pushed Laurens to move forward with the sale. To maximize the profits, Laurens advertised the captives as being "likely" and "healthy"—terms that had specific meanings in the context of the slave trade. "Likely" was commonly used to suggest that individuals were fit for hard labor, and "healthy" showed that the captives were in good physical condition. However, these descriptions did not align with the reality of the captives' conditions, which Laurens knew from his letters were far from ideal.

This discrepancy between the advertised and actual health of the captives raises important questions about the ethical dimensions of such transactions. Laurens, though reluctant and pressured by the Vernon Brothers, who financed the voyage, prioritized the financial aspect of the sale over full transparency. While the use of these terms may have been a common practice at the time, it nevertheless contributed to the commodification of human lives in a manner that concealed the harsh realities the captives were facing.

By looking deeply into this auction advert, we understand Laurens' actions and can better grasp his position's complexities. Laurens was not merely acting out of malice but was a figure navigating a brutal economic system where such advertisements were commonplace.

However, acknowledging this does not excuse the moral compromise applied or diminish the lasting impact on those sold under pretenses. The captives, including a young girl renamed Priscilla, were forced into a system of exploitation and abuse, a stark reminder of the human cost behind these transactions.

In revisiting this history, we gain a deeper understanding of both the economic pressures of the time and the ethical dilemmas faced by those involved. Laurens' false advertising, while typical of the era, reflects the broader dehumanization that was central to the transatlantic slave trade—a system in which the language of commerce often obscured the physical and emotional suffering of enslaved Africans.

🌍 Priscilla’s Legacy Lives On: The Story of the Hare Continues 🌍

On June 30, 1756, a 10-year-old girl from Sierra Leone was ripped from her homeland, packed aboard the notorious slave ship The Hare, and sold in Charleston. Renamed Priscilla, she spent the rest of her life laboring on the Combahee River Plantation, owned by Elias Ball. But Priscilla’s journey didn’t end there. Her spirit survived, and today, 268 years later, her legacy is stronger than ever!

Priscilla’s 7th and 8th generation descendants are not only telling her story—they are on a mission to reconnect with the lost shipmates who endured the horrors of The Hare alongside her. These unknown souls could be Priscilla’s long-lost family members or the ancestors of others who are yet to discover their true heritage.

The Priscilla story is more than history—it’s an ongoing search for truth, connection, and healing. Her descendants, including Thomalind Martin Polite, have journeyed back to Sierra Leone to honor their roots, and now, they look to find those whose stories are intertwined with Priscilla’s.

✨ Do you know your connection to this history? Could your ancestors have been part of the Hare’s cargo? The story of the Hare is a crucial link in the African American lineage, and we continue to uncover the lives of those who were lost, yet never forgotten.

Let’s honor Priscilla and the 62 souls sold in Charles Towne out of about 71 (8 did not survive the journey) who traveled with her, as we keep the search alive. Together, we can piece together a shared history that spans continents and generations.

Hey everyone, get ready for an awesome update on our composite sweetgrass basket project! We're heading off to the Bahamas to take our cool basket project to the next level. Picture this: the Bahamas with its awesome beaches and stories of pirates meet our cutting-edge composite basket.

We're planning to mix in the amazing straw work from the Bahamas—think bright colors and cool sea vibes—with the cool stuff we already got from South Carolina and Sierra Leone. It’s not just adding on; it's like leveling up the whole basket with some island flair rooted in deep history and cultural connections.

We're not just “sewing” with straw; we're sewing in the stories and dreams of the places we visit in our quest for reconnecting the African Continent with her diaspora and vice versa.

To all of you who've been supporting us and dreaming along with us, stay tuned! We're about to make things even more exciting. This is what being creative in cultural conn ections is all about—no limits, no borders, just pure awesome.

In 2019, we embarked on a remarkable expedition to Sierra Leone alongside our Gullah Geechee relatives, retracing our common origins. Our journey was documented by South Carolina Educational TV, and despite limited promotion the film has made some major strides at the national level. Telling our narratives that need to be told is part of what we do, and people are listening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dwi3iimgSWc

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming December trip! Come join us as we honor our diverse heritage and the deep bonds uniting Africans and African Americans. 🌍✨

The Sierra Leone Gullah Geechee Connection Course provides an in-depth portrayal of the attacks carried out by European slavers and their associates, including middlemen and African rulers, on African communities. During these raids of African villages, individuals of all ages and genders were forcefully seized and transported to the coastline, a process marked by extreme brutality and trauma and many deaths. These events were characterized by rampant violence, disorder, and the devastating obliteration of entire villages.
