Yesterday, we marked the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, and reminded ourselves that safety is not optional — it is a shared responsibility and a critical part of national development.
This is why the proposed Fire Safety Bill matters. It is about protecting lives, strengthening public safety systems, and ensuring that workplaces, public buildings, and communities across Sierra Leone are safer for everyone.
Last week, 98 representatives from public and private institutions, as well as civil society and the media, came together in Freetown for the first stakeholder engagement to help shape the bill. Discussions focused on key issues including the safe transportation and storage of fuel, fire certification for public buildings, and stronger penalties for non-compliance with fire safety laws.
This event was co-organised by National Fire Force and the Elba Foundation, with support from Afrigas, Africell, Aureol Insurance Company, CEMMATS, Marampa Mines Limited, Salone Hidden Gems, and Sierra Leone Insurance Association.
The level of engagement and interest demonstrated one important truth: Sierra Leoneans care deeply about safety, accountability, and responsible citizenship. Collective action will be essential to getting this bill passed and effectively implemented.
The journey continues. We now look ahead to engagements across every region to ensure that all key voices are represented in the development of this important legislation.
With the World Day for Safety and Health at Work still on our minds, we call on the private sector to play its part by prioritizing workplace safety and supporting our fundraising campaign for the passage of the Fire Safety Act. Together, we can build a safer Sierra Leone for all.
