*Reinforcing Accountability and Integrity in Education*

On Thursday, 22nd August 2024, I had the privilege of attending a significant meeting alongside Deputy Directors of Education, Members of Parliament from the Committee on Basic and Senior Secondary Education, the Sierra Leone Teachers Union, and the National Council of Head Teachers. We convened with a shared mission: to eliminate unethical practices from our education system and to enforce a culture of accountability as we approach the new academic year.
As we move forward, our approach will be defined by responsibility and transparency. This year will not be like the ones before. Every individual within the system will be held accountable for their actions, starting immediately. No one will be able to evade their responsibilities. Each submission will be documented and signed off by the responsible parties, ensuring that everyone is accountable for their role.
One of the critical issues I highlighted was the growing concern around absenteeism. It is an unfortunate reality that many students, despite being registered, fail to attend their exams. Yet, the government continues to bear the financial burden for these empty seats. This practice drains valuable resources—resources that could be better spent on increasing teacher recruitment or covering tuition fees for deserving students. This misuse of funds must be stopped, and those responsible for perpetuating it will face serious repercussions.
Dishonesty within the system will no longer be tolerated. If a head teacher submits falsified lists to inflate their numbers, they will face suspension. Furthermore, their salaries will be repurposed to offset the financial damage caused by their deceit. This is not a punishment for the sake of punishment, but a necessary action to safeguard the integrity of our educational institutions.
However, this initiative is not solely about imposing strict measures. I am deeply committed to empowering and supporting our educational leaders and teachers. I recognize the challenges they face, and I am ready to secure the resources they need to succeed, even if it requires seeking external support from donors. Our educators are the backbone of our system, and I will do everything in my power to ensure they are equipped to perform at their best.
True accountability must first take root within the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education before it can be extended to the broader public. While I will not shoulder responsibility for issues beyond my control, I will ensure that those under my leadership adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
We are entering a new era for education, one that prioritizes transparency, responsibility, and ethical behavior. I am committed to driving this transformation forward, ensuring that every individual plays their part in restoring and upholding the integrity of our system.
We owe this to our students, our educators, and to the future of our country. Together, we will build an education system that we can all be proud of.
