Milton Margai Technical University Successfully Concludes Recruitment Process.
The Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) has successfully completed its comprehensive recruitment process, which commenced in 2023 following the formal proclamation of the institution as a university under the Universities Act 2021.
Following this transition, the Government of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio demonstrated remarkable commitment to staff welfare by paying over 80% of the severance benefits owed to former employees of the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (formerly a Polytechnic). This gesture was met with overwhelming gratitude from all the staff, many of whom expressed deep appreciation for the timely and transparent payment process — a sharp contrast to past experiences where severance packages took years to be settled.
“President Bio, we say thank you for changing our story and improving the lives of many families. We pray for the remaining less than 20% of payments to be made soon,” said one former staff representative.
In line with the University Court’s directive after the severance payments, the Administration was mandated to advertise vacancies to allow qualified former staff and new applicants to compete for positions under the new University framework. The recruitment advertisements were published over four times, both internally and externally, ensuring transparency and fairness.
A credible interview and shortlisting panel was constituted, comprising retired and current professors from the University of Sierra Leone (USL) and Njala University, members of professional bodies, and representatives of the University Court. This rigorous process guaranteed the selection of candidates based on merit, qualifications, and good character.
MMTU maintains a zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and corruption, particularly regarding “sex or money for grades.” The University has gained national recognition for its strong disciplinary stance, with lecturers who violated ethical codes being immediately dismissed.
“Today, we female students feel safe and respected. Our Vice Chancellor and Principal have restored integrity to the academic environment,” said one delighted female student.
The University Court, at its sitting on 9th September 2025, approved the final list of successful candidates recommended by the Appointments and Promotions Committee. However, a few unsuccessful former staff members attempted to challenge the decision. In response, a special Executive Committee of Court meeting, chaired by the Chancellor, Ing. Dr. Mohamed Ali Jalloh, reaffirmed the Court’s decision, emphasizing that:
1. All interviewees must be officially informed of their outcomes.
2. Newly recruited staff must adhere to the University’s internal redress mechanisms.
3. Those not selected are encouraged to pursue alternative opportunities elsewhere.
A representative from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) further clarified that the Recategorization Document issued by the TEC serves only as a salary and placement benchmark—not as an automatic recruitment guarantee.
Additionally, the Chancellor directed that:
1. A public notice be issued confirming the completion of the recruitment process.
2. All successful candidates undergo a formal orientation on the Universities Act 2021 and the University’s internal policies.
3. Every recruited staff member must submit a medical report and a signed letter of acceptance before resuming duties.
The Administration has assured all stakeholders that it will strictly monitor compliance with the contract terms and institutional regulations.
As MMTU ushers in this new chapter, the entire University community looks forward to the payment of the new University salary structure by the end of October 2025 — a milestone reflecting the institution’s growth, stability, and renewed commitment to excellence.
Congratulations to the Milton Margai Technical University for this landmark achievement and to all newly recruited staff for being part of the institution’s transformative journey.

Milton Margai Technical University Administration Engages Students Amidst Concerns Over Services
In a proactive effort to maintain peace and foster dialogue, the administration of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) on Monday 26th May 2025, conveyed a critical meeting with students of the Congo Cross Campus, following widespread rumors of an impending demonstration, one which the students refuted, though admitting that they have concerns. The concerns raised stemmed from challenges students say they are facing regarding services they are yet to benefit from at the university.
The meeting, held at the Congo Cross campus, saw a strong turnout from the student body, led by the campus governor, who articulated the students' grievances. Chief among the issues raised were delays in the issuance of student ID cards, lack of access to computer services, difficulties with registration, and missing grades.
In attendance from the university's administration were the Vice-Chancellor and Principal (VC&P), the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC), the Dean of the Congo Cross campus, and other senior staff members.
In the presence of the Chief Technical Education Officer, Dr Josephus Brima, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Philip John Kanu, took time to explain the causes of the challenges, noting that the ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction of the university's buildings has directly impacted the delivery of certain services.
According to the VC&P, access to hostels has been restricted due to ongoing construction work, and the installation of computers and other equipment cannot proceed until the rehabilitation is completed. The VC&P emphasized that those short-term inconveniences were part of a broader plan to upgrade facilities and enhance the learning environment for students.
In her vote of thanks, the Minister of Education in the Student Union Government expressed sincere appreciation to the VC&P and the entire university administration for their willingness to engage with students and listen to their concerns.
The meeting ended on a hopeful note, with students expressing a sense of relief that their voices were heard, applauded the VC&P for being a father to them and the administration reaffirming their commitment to ensuring students' welfare remains a top priority throughout the university’s transformation process.
