For me, the hardest things to translate are the things that look familiar.

The date 10.9.2026 looks like something that I understand.

October 9, 2026..., right?

Nope.

It's easier to learn a brand new thing that you've never seen before, than it is to change the meaning of something that you already know.

I've learned this. I know that in Slovakia the first number is the day, followed by the month. I know that 10.9.2026 is September 10, but that's not my first instinct.

There is much more to living in a foreign language than just new words.

You can't assume that you know what to expect when you go to the hospital in a foreign country.

I live in Slovakia now, and the packing list is not the same as when I lived in the US.

Neither is the bill.
