🎓 On 16 September 2026, UPJŠ officially opened the 2026/2027 academic year with a traditional academic ceremony at the Faculty of Medicine.

The ceremony brought together members of the UPJŠ community and guests from public life, including UPJŠ Rector Prof. Daniel Pella, President of the Slovak Republic Rudolf Schuster, and Mayor of Košice Jaroslav Polaček. 🤝

The programme also celebrated the achievements of our academics and students, welcoming 9 newly appointed professors and 26 new associate professors, and recognising outstanding contributions to teaching, research and the university community. 👏

🎶 The ceremony concluded with a performance by Chorus Universitatis Šafarikianae.

🇬🇧 From 8 September to 11 September 2026, UPJŠ was represented in Glasgow by our Head of International Relations and Internationalisation, Mgr. Mária Vasiľová PhD., who took part in a programme of meetings with universities from Europe and beyond.

🤝 The agenda included bilateral meetings with institutions from Romania, Israel, Türkiye, Spain, India, South Korea, Italy and Czechia, as well as a meeting with Niels Hexspoor, representing the Aurora Universities Alliance [] and Palacký University Olomouc [.palackeho].

A key part of the programme was a meeting with representatives of the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian University to discuss potential Erasmus+ cooperation. 🎓

The event was officially opened by PhDr. Denis Nedelka, MBA, Director of the Internationalisation of Higher Education Department at the Slovak Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth. The Slovak national stand brought together representatives of 13 Slovak higher education institutions.

UPJŠ students and staff can join our free Beginner Chinese Course, led by a native Chinese speaker. With 90 minutes of lessons each week, you’ll build your language skills while getting to know Chinese culture through additional activities. 🗣️📚

🎓 80%+ attendance = official course certificate + priority registration for HSK/HSKK exams

🌍 On 7 September 2026, ahead of the 4th Joint Congress of the Czech and Slovak Geographical Societies, UPJŠ Rector Prof. Daniel Pella and Vice-Rector for Educational Quality Prof. Jaroslav Hofierka welcomed leading representatives of the geographical community at the UPJŠ Rectorate.

Among the guests were Prof. Nathalie Lemarchand, President of the International Geographical Union (IGU), Prof. Zoltán Kovács, President of EUGEO, Prof. Martin Boltižiar, President of the Slovak Geographical Society, and Dr. Jiří Preis, Vice-President of the Czech Geographical Society. 🤝

The meeting was also attended by Prof. Roman Soták, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Assoc. Prof. Michal Gallay, Vice-Dean for External Relations, and Assoc. Prof. Ladislav Novotný, Chair of the Congress Organising Committee and Director of the Institute of Geography. 📍

🌍🎓 From 22 to 26 June 2026, UPJŠ hosted the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) Globalization Processes and Global Skills in cooperation with our Aurora Alliance partners: Palacký University Olomouc [.palackeho] 🇨🇿, Universitat Rovira i Virgili [] 🇪🇸, and University of Naples Federico II [] 🇮🇹.

The programme was held under the academic supervision of UPJŠ Vice-Rector for Internationalization, Prof. Silvia Ručinská, with the programme team including Dr. Michaela Lukačínová and Dr. Ondrej Mitaľ from the Faculty of Public Administration [].

Throughout the week, students explored topics related to globalization, sustainability, and global competencies through lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions. The programme also featured a workshop led by Dr. Alžbeta Sniežko, a guest lecture by Juraj Girman, Chairman of the Board of Košice IT Valley [,] activities organized by the Aurora Student Council [, ] under the leadership of its President Simona Gibalová [.gibalova], and contributions from international experts Niels Hexspoor (Palacký University Olomouc) and Ferran Mañé Vernet (Universitat Rovira i Virgili) 🤝🌐

🌍📚 From 8 to 12 June 2026, UPJŠ welcomed colleagues from partner universities across eight countries for the second International Staff Week in Košice! 🤝✨

Throughout the week, participants from universities in Ukraine, Georgia, Brazil, Uzbekistan, Albania, Montenegro, Italy, and Türkiye had the opportunity to discover UPJŠ, present their home institutions, and exchange ideas on research, education, and international cooperation 🌐🎓

The programme also included visits to university departments, the UPJŠ Botanical Garden [], and guided tours of Košice, giving our guests a closer look at both academic life and the city itself 🌿🏛️

Beyond Košice, participants explored some of eastern Slovakia's cultural and historical landmarks, including Kežmarok Castle [], Spiš Castle, and the Tokaj w**e region [], making the week a great blend of professional exchange and cultural discovery 🍇🏰

A big thank you to all our partner universities and to everyone at UPJŠ who helped make this year's Staff Week another memorable international experience 💙

Over the course of the conference, our representatives held meetings with colleagues from the Education University of Hong Kong 🇭🇰, Tel-Hai Academic College 🇮🇱, Ankara University 🇹🇷, Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) 🇵🇪, and Universidad de Congreso 🇦🇷, among others 🌐📚

🌍📚 Day 2 at NAFSA 2026 continued with a series of international meetings and networking opportunities for the UPJŠ delegation 🤝✨

During the day, our representatives met with partners and university representatives from around the world, including the University of Maryland (USA) 🇺🇸, Alexander College (Canada) 🇨🇦, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 🇭🇰, Atilim University (Turkey) 🇹🇷, and City University of Hong Kong 🇭🇰, alongside many other institutions and organizations 🌐🎓

The discussions focused on strengthening international cooperation, mobility opportunities, and future academic connections across different regions of the world 📖✨

The event was held at Crnjanski High School and provided an opportunity to present study possibilities at UPJŠ to local high school students interested in international education 📚✨
