9 Important Parasitic Infections
Parasitic infections are caused by protozoa or worms that can affect the blood, intestines, liver, urinary tract, or other organs. Symptoms vary widely depending on the parasite and severity of infection.
🟣 1. Malaria
➟ Caused by Plasmodium parasites spread by infected Anopheles mosquitoes
➟ Common signs include fever, chills, sweating, headache, and weakness
➟ Severe malaria may cause confusion, anemia, breathing difficulty, or organ failure
➟ Treatment requires specific antimalarial medicines
🟣 2. Giardiasis
➟ Caused by Giardia from contaminated food or water
➟ May cause greasy, foul-smelling diarrhea, bloating, gas, and abdominal cramps
➟ Dehydration and weight loss can occur
➟ Treated with appropriate antiparasitic medicines
🟣 3. Amoebiasis
➟ Usually caused by Entamoeba histolytica
➟ May cause abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea
➟ Rarely, infection can spread to the liver and cause an abscess
➟ Specific anti-amoebic treatment is required
🟣 4. Ascariasis
➟ Caused by the roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides
➟ Many infections cause few symptoms
➟ Heavy infection can cause abdominal pain, poor nutrition, or intestinal blockage
➟ Treated with deworming medicines such as albendazole or mebendazole
🟣 5. Pinworm Infection
➟ Caused by Enterobius vermicularis
➟ Characteristically causes intense a**l itching at night
➟ Sleep disturbance and skin irritation may occur
➟ Treatment usually includes deworming medicine plus careful household hygiene
🟣 6. Hookworm Infection
➟ Larvae usually enter through the skin after contact with contaminated soil
➟ Adult worms attach to the intestine and cause blood loss
➟ Chronic infection may cause iron-deficiency anemia, weakness, and abdominal symptoms
➟ Deworming and iron replacement may be required
🟣 7. Tapeworm Infection
➟ Usually acquired from undercooked infected meat or contaminated food, depending on the species
➟ May cause abdominal discomfort, nausea, or passage of worm segments in stool
➟ Taenia solium eggs can cause cysticercosis, including infection of the brain
➟ Treatment depends on the tapeworm species and site of infection
🟣 8. Toxoplasmosis
➟ Caused by Toxoplasma gondii
➟ Most healthy people have no symptoms or only mild flu-like illness
➟ Infection during pregnancy can harm the developing baby
➟ Severe disease can occur in people with weakened immunity, especially involving the brain or eyes
🟣 9. Schistosomiasis
➟ Caused by parasitic worms acquired through contact with contaminated freshwater
➟ Some species affect the urinary tract and may cause blood in urine
➟ Others affect the intestines and liver, causing abdominal pain, bloody stool, or liver disease
➟ Treatment commonly involves praziquantel
🟣 When to Seek Medical Help
➟ Persistent or bloody diarrhea
➟ Fever after travel to a malaria-risk area
➟ Blood in urine or stool
➟ Severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting
➟ Unexplained anemia or weight loss
➟ Neurological symptoms such as seizures or confusion
➟ Suspected parasitic infection during pregnancy or in someone with weakened immunity
