What happens when breast cancer is hidden by dense breast tissue?

In a recent WTAE story, Pittsburgh resident Deirdre Smith shared how contrast-enhanced mammography helped detect a small breast cancer that was not visible on her routine mammogram.

According to Dr. Amy Kelly, breast imaging radiologist at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, contrast-enhanced mammography uses an iodine-based contrast agent to help highlight areas that may require further evaluation, helping radiologists identify cancers that can be difficult to see on traditional mammograms.

"Deirdre's case is a perfect example of how contrast-enhanced mammography is so useful and helpful," Dr. Kelly shared.
