Curious where your MEi:CogSci journey might take you? 🌍🔬

Our alum Peter Šebáň began his research on kea parrots while studying in the Cognitive Science programme in Bratislava, during his Erasmus mobility semester in Vienna. This study, done in collaboration with an Austrian research team, has now led to a publication in the journal Behavioural Processes!

🦜 In the study, Peter explored how kea learn and solve problems by testing them in two different tasks with both visible and hidden rewards. His findings show how task design can strongly influence animal learning and decision-making.

Peter is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and he had the opportunity to continue his research on kea parrots thanks to an Ernst Mach scholarship. For current and future MEi:CogSci students, this is a great example of how your mobility experience and interdisciplinary training can grow into a larger project — and even lead to an international publication. ✨

🦜 Náš kolega Peťo skúmal učenie u papagájov kea! 🦜

Počas Ernst Mach štipendia na výskumnej stanici Haidlhof (Rakúsko) sa Peter Šebáň namiesto výskumu učenia u ľudí venoval fascinujúcim papagájom kea. Testoval ich v dvoch úlohách – Ephemeral Reward Task a Úlohe rozlišovania množstva – v prostrediach s viditeľnými aj skrytými odmenami.

✅ Hlavné zistenia:

- Kea boli úspešnejšie pri viditeľných odmenách.

- Jednoduchšiu úlohu (viac vs. menej odmien) zvládali lepšie než náročnejšiu Ephemeral Reward Task.

- Dizajn úlohy – najmä viditeľnosť a priestorové usporiadanie – výrazne ovplyvnil ich úspech.

Výsledky tohto výskumu boli teraz publikované v časopise Behavioural Processes.
