[01/08/15]   Three Essential People

A mentor once told me that no matter how many close people you have in your network, if you want to be truly great, you must have three essential people in your life at all times:

A person who is older and more successful than you to learn from
A person who is equal to you to exchange ideas with
A person below you to coach and keep you energized
A great figure of history who embodied this principle was Aristotle. Aristotle was one of the greatest minds to ever grace this beautiful Earth, but this was only so because he was constantly challenging himself and working to refine his talents. He exchanged ideas with other Greek philosophers in the “Academy,” learned from his mentor Plato, and taught a young boy named Alexander…who would later become “Alexander the Great.”

Best wishes for 2015

[12/23/14]   Last few days before Christmas , wishing you all a great one.

[12/01/14]   Cheers for Enugu law school
By Ikechukwu Onah, Vanguard, Tuesday, September 09, 2003
The excellent performance of some students at the Enugu campus of the Nigerian Law school has demonstrated the wisdom in establishing the campus, writes Ikechukwu Onah
Ever since news was received that some students of the Augustine ,Nnamani campus of the Nigeria Law school at Agbani, Enugu State, were among the few that had first class honours results, as well as shared in the best students category in the six subjects entered for in this year's call to bar examinations, there has been continuous celebration in Enugu. In the results, Messrs Orji Peter Ifeanyi and Nri Ezedi Emeka Samuel both of the Enugu law school had first class, with the latter emerging the overall best student and first prize winner in criminal procedure. Available information shows that only one other campus in the country shared in this feat. Enugu State Governor, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani declared the outstanding results, a good testimony of the dividends of democracy which the people of the state enjoy.

The governor is in the best position to make such an assertion. After all , he set up the campus in the first place. when Governor Nnamani took office in 1999, the debate was still raging as to what format was best for the Nigerian law School , following the numerous problems that arose from its relocation to Abuja from Lagos. A most vocal argument was that in addition to the Abuja Law school, the Lagos complex should be re-opened as a campus to help to take the high number of law graduates across the country. But even then, it has become apparent that even the two campuses could not cater for the explosion in number of fresh law graduates being turned out by the various federal state universities in the country as well as numerous and private universities in the country.

The governor understood this need only too well. Afterall, two big universities exist within his domain, and each is remarkable for the huge number of law graduates it turns out year after year. And so, while others were still busy trying to resolve what would happen to the Lagos Law School complex, and how many campuses were desirable for the Nigerian Law School, the Enugu State Government took the decision to develop a campus on its territory. Such that when eventually it was decided that more campuses of the Nigerian Law School should be established across the country, the Augustine Nnamani Campus at Agbani was ready. The campus itself, commissioned in 2001, is a marvel in terms of facilities it boasts. This includes a digitalized telephone exchange block and equipments worth N100 million; NEPA transmission sub-station worth N3 million; 350 KVA generator set; blocks of lecture rooms; male/female hostels; administrative block and offices; street lights; a water network; campus asphalt roads, a multi-purpose auditorium with a 650 sitting capacity, etc.

Today, visitors to the Augustine Nnamani Campus of the Nigerian Law School at Agbani are wont to wonder what level of foresight could have made a Nigerian Governor, to embark on the development of such a beautiful project. The usual thing would have been to proclaim that the government was embarking on such a project, and then for the next four years (or even eight for that matter!) proceed to milk the state dry with no appreciable progress on site. In this instance however, even before the vast majority of the people of the state knew what was going on, the structures were already completed and the school was ready for take-off. Infact, when the then Attorney -General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Bola Ige came to Agbani to flag off the school, he was stunned by what had been done in the place within the short-time that the administration has been in existence. Ever since, the generous support given to the Law School's administration had been such as to compel a grateful and overwhelmed Director-General of the Enugu Law School, Mr. Ernest Ojukwu to declare, "the light kindled by Governor Nnamani in Agbani will shine across Africa"! Pacesetters' tradition.

In performing this remarkable feat of establishing the Law School campus, the governor may have been following the course also charted in gold around this clime by no less a person than the all-towering Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. Sometime in the early 1950s, the need for more indigenous tertiary institutions in the country became apparent. But even then, while every person was arguing about the modalities for meeting that felt need, the great Zik quietly proceeded to found the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in the present Enugu State. Today, that school is a leader in the comity of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. And then as now, it was only when others saw what had been done in the East that they proceeded to actualize their own plans. Today, four campuses of the Law School are in place across the country, and more may be in the offing.

At the commissioning of the school way back in 2001, Governor Nnamani had explained that the vision behind establishing the campus was to create an idylic environment in which academic excellence will prevail. Agbani itself is a town about twenty minutes drive from Enugu, a distance short enough to guarantee an intercourse with that city of dreams, but wide enough to ensure the tranquility necessary for academic excellence. This year's results of the Nigerian Law School, more than anything else, has borne the Governor's vision out. As the Governor himself was quoted as saying, "results as this, are the best testimony and indication that Enugu has been fully appreciated as a very caring state with the best of environments to promote the potentials of whoever chooses to live in it".

Indeed, Enugu may be the place to be. The peace and tranquility prevalent in the state is second to none. And the orderly pace and almost temperate climate of the area (Zik says it has the 3rd highest altitude in the country, after Obudu and Jos) have ensured, since the very beginning that men after men troop to the city in pursuit of work and pleasure. No wonder, Enugu wears the unofficial tag of the education capital of Nigeria, with two Universities, a Polytechnic and a plethora of various tertiary institutions. On top of all these, the government of Dr. Nnamani has striven since inception to make the state even more conducive to its residents by spreading the dividends of democracy to all the nooks and crannies of the state. Under this environment, it is not a surprise that the Enugu Law School could produce this spectacular result. Infact, without prejudice to the abilities and efforts of students and staff of the school, the result, are if anything, a pointer to how far a favourable environment could positively affect the potential and determine the performance of the individual.
