Tribute to Igor Ozim (1931-2024) - Renowned Violinist and Violin teacher / Excellent Article published two days ago in The Strad by Dijana Ihas.
Monday, March 23, 2026, marked two years since our dear violin professor Igor Ozim—a great artist and teacher—left us.
Personally, I was fortunate to have drawn upon his immense violin and musical knowledge as his student in Cologne from September 1975 through March 1980.
Rare are the individuals who so perfectly combine their roles as artist and educator: roles that are, in any case, closely intertwined and, in his case, formed a complete whole.
We recall numerous concerts where he literally shone on stage with his magnificent and masterful playing, and as a result, we always experienced noble, authentic interpretations.
With the same energy and passion, he selflessly imparted his immense knowledge in every moment of teaching. All of us who were fortunate enough to be his students can attest to how Professor Igor Ozim gave his all in every lesson.
The greatest strength of his teaching, however, was undoubtedly the balance—or symbiosis—between the technical demands of mastering the instrument and the interpretive demands of each individual piece, grounded in harmonic analysis and an understanding of stylistic conventions, with the ultimate goal: “a well-rounded interpretation as a whole.”
We are forever immensely grateful to our dear teacher Igor Ozim for the information and guidance he shared with us, as well as for the dedication and support we received from him.
‘Never just the notes’: the musical and teaching legacy of Igor Ozim
The violinist and pedagogue Igor Ozim died on 23 March 2024. Two years on, Dijana Ihas writes about his legacy to commemorate a teacher whose seven‑decade career shaped generations of musicians through his analytical clarity, uncompromising discipline and deep commitment to musical expression
