Day 4
The last plenary has started. Maureen McGarvey, who is -among other things - also Chair of the IATEFL Scholarship Committee, will hold the talk "The ABC of CPD", in which she will talk focus on teacher development.
Just like teachers encourage students to learn, so should our workplace make our continuing professional development a priority to ensure that both teachers and students can reach their full potential.

Let's make sure this conference goes out with a bang! 💥

An unforgettable ending to our 26th IATEFL conference!

The internet is undoubtedly a ~magical place~ which also conceals many dangers. But are you digitally literate enough to spot them? 👀🔎💻

Today we had the honour to welcome another amazing plenary speaker at our conference - Sophia Mavridi. In her talk "Digital literacies and the new digital divide", she explained to us that to be digitally literate - nowadays an indispensable skill - it is not only important that we know how to use technology; we also have to, for example, be able to critically evaluate digital content. She also introduced the concept of the new digital divide, which separates those who know how to use technology effectively as well as responsibly, and also gave some ideas about what can be done to close this gap.

This morning's plenary "Teachers, Students and Total Behaviour" imparted knowledge that is useful in a teacher's private as well as professional life. Mojca Belak, certainly no stranger to IATEFL conferences, provided some examples from her own and others' experiences and got us to engage in conversation with one another. This made her talk dealing with Choice Theory and its application in the teaching profession easier to grasp. According to the theory presented, everyone is in charge of their own behaviour, which consists of four components - acting, thinking, feeling and physiology. We are able to access the first two directly, whereas the last two can only be accessed indirectly (through the first two components). The knowledge shared by the speaker facilitates the teacher's comprehension and analysis of others' behaviour, making it easier for them to deal with angry parents (and ex-teacher grandparents), dissatisfied headteachers or colleagues and unhappy students. 🎓

After that, it was time for some workshops. Now, we may not be pheasant pluckers, but we recognize the importance of speaking in the language learning process. In the workshop "Unattached Speaking", Milan Mandeljc showed us the importance of teaching students how to speak well, and he had us do some entertaining activities that are aimed at developing unattached speaking skills that EFL students should acquire. These activities can be used in the classroom to improve the students' unattached speaking abilities and challenge them. Now, try to say "red leather, yellow leather" very quickly seven times in a row! Easy-peasy? I think not! 😅

Last year, it was the centenary of the end of the First World War. In the workshop "Waltzing With Matilda and Cultural Heritage", Sandra Kozorog-Košuta presented the activities she did with her students connected to WWI. We listened to two songs that served as a starting point to learning about cultural heritage and reflecting about the war. Her students produced original creations (letters from or to the front during WWI and aphoristic texts talking about the war) with striking power of expression. ✉📜

Yesterday evening, Lynda Steyne was greeted with a thunderous applause thanks to her talk "(e)M Power Ed Or The Power of M in Education". 👏🙌
Let's face the facts - there are many misconceptions about the teaching profession and things connected to it that we didn't know about when we first started out as teaching. Nobody warned us that certain things are inextricably linked with it, but only those who have been in the profession for some time are aware of. That is why many new teachers feel overwhelmed because they weren't prepared for these challenges at all, and the rate of teachers who leave the profession after the first five years is consequently (too) high.
Teachers have to get used to many Ms: meetings, mountains of paperwork, monk (barely existent social life), and there is one M in education that is particularly important and should be brought to the fore - mentor. Someone who facilitates and assists development. They should be the one to prepare the mentee for all the unanticipated challenges they will undoubtedly have to confront.
Lynda Steyne explained to us what makes a good mentor and what it takes to be(come) one. A mentor should boost self-confidence, provide support for classroom management and guidance on time and workload management, aid professional development and bring about improvement in the mentee's self-reflection and problem-solving skills. Also, mentor-mentee relationships lead to the formation of professional networks among teachers, thus achieving mutual collegiality - yet another M in education that is much desired but not always present.
The plenary inspired teachers to takes steps that will promote their professional growth, which will consequently result in students' improvement. 🎓

The second day of the conference was undoubtedly eventful; apart from attending workshops and plenaries, socialising, and giving out prizes to the lucky winners of the raffle draw, the attendees could participate in a yoga class.
For a well-balanced and happy life, taking care of yourself needs to be a priority. Being mindful of your physical and mental well-being is extremely important, for it is the basis of successfully growing both personally and professionally. Nicola Epps' yoga session enabled us to relax, do something good for our body and soul, and connect with our spirit, our breath, our body and the air surrounding us. 💯🙏
Next, Sandra Horvatić's workshop "Let's Get Creative - ICT in ELT" familiarised teachers with several ICT tools (games, apps, quizzes) and ways that appeal to the tech savvy student of the third millennium who is sick of dull and monotonous materials intended for learning English. Through the teacher's usage of ICT in the classroom, the students are faced with something they love and use all the time (good ol' internet 💝), which makes learning new things much more enjoyable. So get on the Memes, Quizzes and Interactive Games Bandwagon to cause Mission Impossible: Student Engagament to turn into Mission Piece of 🎂! 💻+👧👦=🎉💟
Another workshop connected to motivating and engaging students we got to hear today was "Interactive Literature". Adriana Beletić presented materials that combine language acquisition on different levels while introducing various elements of anglophone cultures (historical events, English monarchs, prominent authors, famous literary works, etc.) The workbooks contain a wide variety of exercises that combine reading, analyses, word games, illustration tasks, dramatising, quizzes and creative writing exercises. The workbooks deliver intriguing and motivating tasks that encourage the students to interact as well as produce their own works. 📚

Anyone already wondering what day 3 has in store for us? 👀👂💥

Keeping up with internet trends is a great way of connecting with your students ... and correcting their mistakes! Petra Krhlanko introduced us to the concept of "Memebacking" - responding to students' mistakes with memes, thus bridging the gap between generations and bringing fun to both the student and the teacher.

English grammar sure is one tough cookie, so both teaching and learning it well and effectively may seem like a daunting task. In Jerry Bloemsma's workshop "Using the 21st Century Skills to Teach Grammar", the listeners learned that 21st century skills like cooperation, critical thinking, creativity, social skills and many more should play a role in ELT because they have proven themselves to be a valuable tool. The speaker made the point that teachers can develop certain teaching approaches and methods that include the conveyance of the skills that are indispensable in today's world while also helping students truly comprehend different grammar points.
This conference is a perfect opportunity to connect with others in your field, grow as a person and as a teacher as well as feel inspired by amazing speakers. I hope that all those who are here are having a wonderful time, and that those who did not come might join us next year. We are always happy to see new faces and exchange our knowledge and experiences.

It's 8th March - International Women's Day. The colour of the 26th International IATEFL Slovenia Conference is pink. This year, we decided to shine the spotlight on women in our field and showcase them as plenary speakers. We believe we succeeded in highlighting experts, both native and non-native speakers, from different generations, while still letting the predominant gender in education shine the most. In a true fashion of celebrating women, take time to pamper yourself. You are at a spa resort, after all! 😉🌸
