🇬🇧 Four researchers from the Centre for Astrophysics and Cosmology at the University of Nova Gorica have just completed a two-week Erasmus+ academic visit to the Department of Astronomy at the University of Washington in Seattle! The department plays a leading role in the Rubin Observatory / LSST project and offered a highly stimulating environment for academic exchange. Our colleagues had the opportunity to collaborate with world-class astrophysicists, exchange best practices in research and teaching, and explore future collaboration opportunities between the two institutions. A fantastic experience that will leave a lasting mark on our work at UNG!

🇬🇧 Journal club in full swing at Center for Astrophysics and Cosmology, with lively debate over the latest results - and what better way to wrap up than at the UNG party, good food and even better company. 🌳🥂
🇸🇮 Živi razgovor na CAC journal clubu, a za kraj - proslava uz UNG, dobra hrana in še boljša družba. 🌳🥂"

V okviru evropskega projekta TALES - Time-domain Astrophysics of Supermassive Black Holes s pomočjo metod umetne inteligence prečesava ogromne količine podatkov Rubin Observatory in odkriva raztrganja zvezd v bližini črnih lukenj, ko se zvezda preveč približa supermasivni črni luknji in jo silovite plimske sile dobesedno raztrgajo. 🌌🔭
🇬🇧 Meet Erin, a PhD student at the Center for Astrophysics and Cosmology of the University of Nova Gorica! As part of the European project TALES - Time-domain Astrophysics of Supermassive Black Holes, she uses machine learning methods to sift through vast amounts of Rubin Observatory data to discover stars being torn apart near black holes, when a star drifts too close to a supermassive black hole and powerful tidal forces literally rip it apart. ✨🕳️
🌟 Meet our very own Erin — TALES Doctoral Candidate at the v Novi Gorici / University of Nova Gorica!
🇧🇪 Erin grew up in a small village in Belgium and studied Physics and Astronomy in Brussels before moving to Leiden for a master's in Astronomy with a specialisation in Data Science. It was there that her passion for using machine learning to find rare astronomical events really took shape. 🌌
Her PhD focuses on Tidal Disruption Events — the dramatic moments when stars are torn apart by black holes — using the Rubin Observatory and machine learning to find and study these extreme phenomena. She is also a member of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's LSST Science Collaboration.
The spark? A high school teacher who put on an episode of "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey". And the rest is history... 🔭
Outside research, she knits, crochets, bakes, reads, and explores Europe by bike with her siblings. 🧵🚲

🇸🇮 SLO

Our Slovenian delegation attended the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) Council meeting in La Palma last week. Standing in front of one of the observatory's striking segmented mirrors, the team got a close look at the instruments that will soon open a new window on the high-energy universe. We're looking forward to the exciting gamma-ray data the observatory will deliver once it begins operations!

🎓✨ Dan univerze na Lavričevem trgu v Ajdovščini ✨🎓
Danes, 28. maja, je Ajdovščina zaživela v duhu znanosti in umetnosti!
Živ(el)a znanost in umetnost! 🎉

🎓✨ University Day at Lavričev trg, Ajdovščina ✨🎓
Today, 28 May, Ajdovščina came alive with science and art! From noon until 6 PM, the University of Nova Gorica filled Lavričev trg with interactive stands, workshops and hands-on experiments.
Among the activities at the Centre for Astrophysics and Cosmology, visitors observed the Sun and its sunspots through a telescope, tested their knowledge in a Who Wants to Be a Millionaire-style astroquiz with prizes (not millions, sadly 😄), and got creative at the "Paint a Black Hole" art workshop 🎨🕳️. The School of Science and its labs offered, among other things, a look at fascinating objects under the microscope. 🔬
Thank you to everyone who stopped by and to all UNG colleagues for a great day!
