IAS 36 Impairment of Assets
🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

Tangible or physical asset

Impairment

“the higher of its fair value less costs to sell and its value in use.”

Fair value ထဲက နေ cost to sell ကို နှုတ်ပြီး ရလာတဲ့ Amount ရယ်....
Value in use က ရလာတဲ့ Amount ရယ်ထဲက ...

“Value in use is based on the present value of expected future cash flows”

• Inventories
• Assets arising from construction contracts
• Deferred tax assets
• Assets arising from employee benefits
• Financial Assets
• Investment property carried at fair value
• Agricultural assets carried at fair value
• Insurance contract assets
• Non- current asset held for sale
• Land
• Buildings
• Machinery and Equipment
• Investment property carried at cost
• Intangible assets
• Goodwill
• Investments in subsidiaries, associates, and Joint Ventures carried at cost
• Assets carried at revalued amounts under IAS 16 and IAS 38

External sources
• Market value declines
• Negative changes in Technology, Markets, Economy, or Laws
• Increases in market interest rates
• Net assets of the company higher than market capitalization

Internal sources

• Obsolescence or Physical damage
• Asset is idle, part of a restructuring or held for disposal
• Worse economic performance than expected
• For investments in subsidiaries, Joint ventures or associates, the carrying amount is higher than the carrying amount of the investee’s assets, or dividend exceeds the total comprehensive income of the investee.

“the higher of its fair value less costs to sell and its value in use.” ကနေ Recoverable amount ကို ရပါမယ်…..

အကယ်လို့ fair value less costs to sell (သို့မဟုတ်) fair value less costs to disposal မရှိခဲ့ရင် Value in Use ကို ပဲ Recoverable amount လို့ သတ်မှတ်ရပါမယ်

Fair value less costs to disposal ပြီးရင် costs to disposal (သို့မဟုတ်) costs to sell ကိုနှုတ်လို့ရလာတဲ့ Amount နဲ့…..
Value in Use
Value in Use
• An estimate of the future cash flows the entity expects to derive from the asset
• Expectations about possible variations in the amount or timing of those future cash flows
• The time value of money, represented by the current market risk free rate of interest
• The price for bearing the uncertainty inherent in the asset
• Other factors, such as illiquidity, the market participants would reflect in pricing the future cash flows the entity expects to derive from the asset
Cash flow projections လုပ်တဲ့အခါမှာ reasonable and supportable assumptions ပေါ်မှာ အခြေခံဖို့လိုပါတယ်.. budgets and forecasts တွေလုပ်တဲ့အခါမှာလည်း ၅နှစ်ထက် မကျော်လွန်တဲ့ budgets and forecasts ပေါ်မှာ တွက်သင့်ပါတယ်..
cash inflows or outflows from financing activities, or income tax receipts or payments
The discount rate is the rate the entity would pay in a current market transaction to borrow money to buy that specific asset or portfolio.
weighted average cost of capital

An impairment loss is recognised whenever recoverable amount is below carrying amount.
Impairment loss = Carrying amount - Recoverable amount

IAS 36 Impairment

“ EFFICIENCY Vs EFFECTIVENESS”

Goodwill
Goodwill
✏️✏️✏️✏️

NCA $700
Current assets $100
Share capital $180
Share premium $20
Reserves $200
Current liabilities $100
Non-current liabilities $300
📖📖📖📖📖
NCI in the Goodwill calculation

1) Proportion of FV of Subsidiary’s Net Assets
2) FV of NCI itself

Apple buys 80% Bear company for 1,000. The FV of Bear’s Net assets was 1,100.
The proportion of FV of Subsidiary’s Net Assets အရ..
Consideration $1000
NCI (20% x 1100) $220
FV of Net Assets Acquired ($1100)
Goodwill. $120
Apple buys 80% Bear company for 1,000. The FV of Bear’s Net assets was 1,100. The FV of NCI at this date was 250.

FV of NCI itself အရ

Consideration $1000
NCI $250
FV of Net Assets Acquired ($1100)
Goodwill. $150

IAS 36 impairment of assets
An asset is impaired when its carrying amount exceeds the recoverable amount.
CA > RA = impairment loss
Example 1 (Proportionate NCI)
Apple company owns 80% of Bear company. The goodwill attributable to the parent is $80 and Net Assets are $200.The recoverable amount is $240.
How much is the impairment?
Answer…..
Proportionate goodwill $80
Goodwill including the notional unrecognised NCI ($80 x 100/80) $100
CA > RA = impairment loss အရ
CA = $200 (Net Assets) +$100 (Goodwill)= $300
RA = $240
Impairment loss $60
The impairment shown in the accounts though is 80% x 60 = 48.ဘာလို့ $48ပဲ ျပရတာလဲဆိုရင္ goodwill in the proportionate methodမွာ parent ရဲ့ goodwill ပဲ ျပတဲ့အတြက္ impairment မွာလဲ parent က ပိုင္ဆိုင္တဲ့ 80% ပဲျပရပါတယ္...
Goodwill calculation
Thank you…

ACCA: F3 The IASB’s Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting

✏️✏️✏️✏️✏️✏️

1. Relevance
2. Faithful representation

📕Relevance

📕Faithful representation
1. Complete…

2. Neutral …..

3. Free from error…..

3. Timeliness….

4. Understandability ….

Conceptual Framework

Inventory
Inventory Valuation Methods

IFRS
specific identification
first-in, first-out (FIFO)
weighted average cost.
US GAAP
specific identification
first-in, first-out (FIFO)
weighted average cost.
last-in, first-out (LIFO)

1.specific identification method
Cost of sales ရယ် cost of inventory ရယ် မှာ ဖော်ပြတဲ့ valueက အရင်မူလတုန်းက ဝယ်ခဲ့တဲ့ ဝယ်ရင်းစျေးတွေ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်..
2. Fist – In, First – Out (FIFO)
3. Weighted Average Cost
Total cost of goods available for sale ကို တည်ပြီးTotal units available for sale နဲ့စားလိုက်တာပါပဲ…
4. Last – In, First – Out (LIFO)
Inventory valuation methods
နောက်အပိုင်းတွေမှာ perpetual and periodic inventory systems, LIFO to FIFO comparison ကို ဆက်လက်မျှဝေပေးသွားပါမယ်..

Inventory (IFRS Vs US GAAP)

Cost of inventory

• cost of purchase
(ဘာေတြပါလဲဆိုရင္ purchase price, import and tax duties, transport and handling cost, insurance during transport, trade discounts, rebates)
• costs necessary to bring inventories to their present location and condition
(This will include the cost of transportation goods to a showroom)
• cost of conversion
(IFRSေရာ US GAAP တူပါတယ္)
▪️abnormal costs arising due to wastage of materials, labor or other production conversion inputs
▪️Storage costs of final/finished goods
▪️Administrative overhead
▪️ Selling costs
▪️ Unused portion of fixed production overhead
▪️Transportation of finished goods to customer
✏️✏️✏️✏️
A Enterprise manufactures car. The inventory related costs are shown below:
Yr 2020
Raw materials $60,000

Director labor $40,000
Abnormal wastage $5,000
Transportation of raw material $10,000
Transportation of finished goods to showroom $1,000
Storage of finished goods $20,000
Transportation of finished goods to customer $150
Question ????????

a) What costs should be included in inventory in 2020?
b) What costs should be expensed in 2020 ?
✏️✏️✏️✏️✏️✏️
Answer
(a) Inventory cost
Raw materials $60,000
Director labor $40,000
Transportation of raw material $10,000
Transportation of finished goods to showroom $1,000
Total cost $111,000
(b) What costs should be expensed in 2020 ?
Abnormal wastage $5,000
Storage of finished goods $20,000
Transportation of finished goods to customer $150
