βThe work we did is a reminder that we can make a positive difference in the lives of others.β
For Sivasankar, this mindset guided him throughout his journey at the School of Hospitality. Stepping into the role of Overall in Charge (OIC) for the Youth Corps Leader's Programme, he spearheaded impactful actvities for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (PWIDs) β from terrarium and mocktail-making workshops to a signature glow-in-the-dark party β adapting swiftly to project changes while ensuring every activity was accessible, engaging, and empowering.
Today, we celebrate Sivasankar from the Diploma in Customer Experience Management with Business (now known as Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management) as he receives the Service Learner (Merit) and Character (Merit) Awards! Herbal soup, minus the bitter taste and hours of boiling. Four RP students just created exactly that, and it won them the Vege-Tales Challenge 2025.
Traditional Chinese herbal soups are good for you, but the taste is strong and they take ages to prepare. The team solved this by creating an instant version β just add hot water.
They extracted herbal goodness into a powder, then blended it with tomato, celery, broccoli, garlic and onion for a familiar minestrone-style flavour. Add dehydrated vegetables and you get a soup packed with antioxidants that needs no fridge and contains no preservatives.
The team split by expertise. Heshvan Naidu and Muhammad Danial from Republic Polytechnic School of Applied Science - RP SAS handled extraction and drying. Danial Chia and Quek Jun Hean from Republic Polytechnic School of Hospitality - RP SOH perfected the taste, balancing herbal notes with something more approachable for consumers.
Their challenge was extracting the beneficial compounds without the bitterness. Lots of testing solved it. They partnered with F**k Sang Tong, a local herbal health product company, who provided ingredients and expertise throughout the project.
The insight was simple: many people know herbal soup is good for them, but the taste and hassle put them off, especially younger consumers. Combining it with something familiar, like minestrone, makes it easier to enjoy.
F**k Sang Tong is now exploring commercialisation. If it hits supermarkets, we might all get more excited about our greens (and herbs).

Behind these achievements were months of preparation. Since April this year, our students have worked hard to transform their ideas into industry-ready event concepts, combining creativity with business strategy, marketing and financial planning. They refined their audience-first marketing strategies, strengthened their financial models, and confidently presented their funding strategies before a panel of judges comprising representatives from the Singapore Tourism Board, SACEOS and industry leaders.
A special thank you to our coaches, Stephanie Soon, Aaron Ann and Sharifah Nurhafizah, as well as industry mentors Tyler Lim and Gladys Yao, for their guidance and support.
This is what real-world learning looks like at RP School of Hospitality, Singaporeβs only polytechnic school dedicated to hospitality and events education, where students gain hands-on experience and develop the skills to thrive in the industry.
