Astronomers, using data from multiple telescopes, have captured a high-speed galactic collision within Stephan's Quintet. The galaxy NGC 7318b is plunging into the group at an astonishing speed of 2 million mph, generating a massive shockwave. This phenomenon, studied with the advanced WEAVE instrument, sheds light on galactic dynamics and evolution. Published in the *Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society*, the research not only underscores WEAVE's capabilities but also enhances our understanding of how galaxies interact and transform over time. Though unfolding over millions of years, the collision is observed as a strikingly dynamic event.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope captures a mesmerizing image of Sagittarius C, a star-forming region near the Milky Way's central black hole. Revealing never-before-seen details, the image showcases a dance of red and white streamers, cyan-coloured ionized hydrogen with mysterious needle-like structures, and a bustling cluster of protostars. Led by undergraduate Samuel Crowe, the observation team hails the telescope's groundbreaking ability to explore star formation in the chaotic galactic centre.
Binary Neutron Star Merger - When Light Lags Behind Gravity
In this video, we explore the mysteries of light and gravity in the merger of two neutron stars. We delve into this cosmic event where the speed of light challenges our understanding and find out why gravitational waves arrived before the light when we received a signal from such an event in the distant galaxy NGC 4993.
Astronomers have made a significant breakthrough by detecting two massive jets emitted from the black hole M87. These jets exhibit an 11-year wobbling cycle, offering direct evidence that black holes spin, in line with Einstein's theory of relativity.
M87, a well-studied black hole, was famously imaged in 2019, but confirming black hole spin has been a challenge. With their intense gravitational pull, black holes attract material that forms accretion disks around them, resulting in powerful jets of hot material. The energy source for these jets was unclear, but it was suggested that black holes' magnetic fields might be responsible, provided the black holes were spinning rapidly.
Astronomers studied M87* using a global network of radio telescopes from 2000 to 2022 to investigate this. They found that the black hole's jets displayed an 11-year wobbling pattern, indicating precession, much like a spinning top. This discovery confirms Einstein's theory and raises questions about the black hole's rapid rotation and the potential discovery of photon spheres—a faint ring of light around the black hole offering insights into quantum gravity theory.
In the fields of modern astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology, a significant challenge revolves around understanding cosmic expansion. There are conflicting measurements of the universe's rate of expansion, with one method showing values about 9% higher than another. Resolving this issue is crucial for our cosmological understanding.
A potential solution lies in studying type "One A" supernovae, known as standard candles, due to their consistent properties. These supernovae emit intense and consistent light, making them valuable for measuring distances. However, observing them, especially at extreme distances, has been challenging.
A groundbreaking development came with the discovery of a type "One A" supernova that appeared in triplicate, caused by gravitational lensing by a foreground galaxy cluster. This rare event offers a new way to measure the universe's expansion rate with high precision.
Type "One A" supernovae are unique in their characteristics, allowing us to study them even in galaxies billions of light-years away. Gravitational lensing can magnify background objects, including these supernovae, allowing for precise measurements.
In this case, Dr. Brenda Frye's team used the James Webb Space Telescope to observe a massive galaxy cluster, PLCK G 165.7+67.0, with gravitational lensing effects. They discovered a type "One A" supernova in a background galaxy, Arc 2, located 16 billion light-years away, appearing in three locations within the image.
The galaxy cluster G165, with a mass of 260 trillion solar masses, is already 4.5 billion light-years away. The observations also revealed 21 lensed objects in the field, confirming they are gravitationally lensed by the cluster.
The study allowed astronomers to reconstruct the lensing profile of the cluster, which is essential for accurate measurements of distant objects. Ongoing observations aim to precisely measure the universe's expansion rate using the cosmic distance ladder method.
The discovery of the triply-imaged supernova, named "Supernova H0pe," offers hope for resolving the cosmic expansion puzzle, thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope's capabilities. This breakthrough may bring us closer to unlocking the universe's greatest secrets.
