The Conference Board Leading Economic Index (LEI) is a composite index made of 10 forward-looking indicators that historically lead the economy by ~7 months. In simple terms: the LEI spots trouble before it shows up in GDP or unemployment numbers. It is 1 of the 14 major indicators in our proprietary Timing & You Relative Risk Index (RRI)™.

It fell 0.3% in June. This MAY sound minor until one zoom out. Over the first half of 2025, it is down 2.8% and that is more than double the 1.3% drop from late 2024. This is a WARNING.

In terms of 3Ds Rule:
• Duration: LEI has been falling for more than 6 months.
• Depth: It’s dropped >4.1% annualized.
• Diffusion: Most of the 10 indicators are declining.

This triple-whammy has triggered a recession signal for the third month in a row. Historically, this 3Ds Rule almost always precedes a recession. This signal has shown up for every U.S. downturn since WW2.

Don’t get lulled by the high U.S. stock prices.

Equities can surge even when the economy is deteriorating especially when rate cut bets are flying. But the fundamentals are weakening and the LEI is sounding the alarm 🚨🚨

Bottom line: We are NOT in recession yet but the map says “icy road ahead”. Whether one is an investor or in business or just planning for 2025, it will be wise to pay attention 🙏🍀
