When did self-defense stop being about defense?
I froze once. 2011. A drunk man got aggressive at a coffeeshop in Singapore. I had years of martial arts training: forms, techniques, competitions. And my mind went completely blank.
That night, I realized: training to train is not the same as training to be ready.
Over 14 years of teaching, I've noticed a pattern. People take self-defense classes, work out, learn moves, feel stronger. But when I ask directly: "If someone grabbed you right now - hard, aggressive, no warning, would your body know what to do?"
The honest answer is usually: "Probably not."
That's what I call The Confidence Illusion. You feel like you've done something. But deep down, you're still not certain.
My wife and her sisters have shared stories. Followed on bikes. Harassed on the MRT. Situations that escalate from uncomfortable to threatening. And the question is always: "What would I actually do if it got physical?"
Most self-defense training in Singapore makes people feel safer. But feeling safer and being safer are not the same thing.
In this article, I break down:
→ Why most programs create confidence illusions, not real readiness
→ The gap between sport-based training and actual self-defense
→ What happens to your memory under real stress
→ Why FlowGuard was built differently; one-on-one, pressure-tested, no illusions
I'm not writing this to sell you something. I'm writing this because I never want anyone else to experience that freeze.
If you've tried the group classes, the sport training, the comfortable drills, and something still feels missing... maybe this is it.
Self Defense Singapore: Why Most Training Doesn’t Prepare You
Why most self-defense classes in Singapore create confidence illusions, not real readiness.

As a student, I invest most of my training hours into 1:1 sessions.
This comes after burning months and years of my time inside low quality group classes.
Locked into long memberships. Travelled for 2-3 hours back and forth just to do group cardio or static movements I could have done at home. Paid for uniforms, gradings, certs, that feel more external than internalized.
I progressed. I made friends. I had fun. But as I grew older, time became more invaluable. I needed quality over volume.
Low quality is:
Did I do it correctly?
“Yes. Just do more of it.”
How do I improve?
“No pain, no gain.”
High quality is:
Did I do it correctly?
“You did the first part right.
But let’s isolate the second part for refinement.”
How do I improvise?
“You haven’t understood timing yet.
Let’s work on it now.”
One high quality session not only beats months of low ones, it brings the breakthroughs that can’t be achieved with rote volume.
There are many paths up the same mountain. But not all of them honor the climb.

Should self defence training start the week before your flight?
I get this question often. Parents messaging me because their child is leaving for university overseas next month. Professionals traveling for work in three weeks. Everyone looking for crash courses—4, 8, maybe 16 sessions before departure.
My answer: Yes, I can do that. But no, it's not what I recommend.
Self defence isn't about cramming techniques before a trip. It's a long-term cultivation of awareness, response, and resolution. It's psychological as much as physical. And it's something you hope never to use—but are grateful to have when you need it.
In this article, I break down why "at least they'll have something" isn't enough, what real readiness actually requires, and when you should actually start training.
If you've been putting this off, now's the time.

3 years ago I lost contact with my beloved Wooden Dummy. (Left: 2017, Right: Today)
Due to some miscommunication, my friend sold it away🤯
However a few days ago, I managed to find the buyer and purchased it back!🤩
I first bought this Dummy in 2012 for $1200, working as a Relief Teacher for several months!
My teacher went to China to handpick the wood, collaborate with a carpenter, to custom make it.
Top quality material, personalized dimensions, the perfect training partner.🗿
Glad to have you back 💯💪🏾👊🏾💙
Time to train!

Is martial art good for beating people up? Maybe. Is it imperative for self-defense (especially those of you who travel often)? Absolutely.
But when I look at a practitioner, I’m looking to see if the practitioner is practicing the martial art, or is the martial art practicing the practitioner — do you know what I mean?
For me, martial art is my relationship with life itself. It’s important to be physically athletic, but be sure to translate those capabilities into every aspect of your life.
For example, JKD principles: Lean, Functional, Personalized. Is your life / career / relationship / spiritual goals reflecting the same values? Otherwise, maybe you haven’t really internalized your practice.
If you want to find out how you can cultivate the maximum level of Integration and Unification you can have with your training AND results in life... Check the Link in the Comments to learn the 5 Core Principles every aspiring JKD Practitioner should know.👇🏻
