In the external world,this day signifies the victory of good over evil. It was on this day that Rama decimated Ravana to rescue Sita.

In the true sense, after 9 days of celebration of Devi the divine feminine (not to be confused with female), the consciousness which pervades, holds and binds together the universe, it signifies the inner journey of moving from compulsiveness to consciousness.
