Officially opened in 1961 at Upper Aljunied Road, Sang Nila Utama Secondary School holds the distinction of being Singapore’s very first Malay-medium government secondary school. It was a milestone in education, being the third secondary school built after Singapore achieved full internal self-government in 1959.

Long before Pulau Tekong became the heart of National Service and military training, it was a tranquil island of kampongs… and village schools! Here, the island kids followed the same curriculum as their peers on mainland Singapore. By the mid-1980s, as islanders packed up and left for the mainland, these schools shuttered their doors for good.

Watch this video to find out about Mr Kenneth Vaithilingam, a retired MOE teacher, who spent 10 years teaching English at Kampong Pasir Malay School on Pulau Tekong. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/st180-your-singapore-story-teaching-on-pulau-tekong-school-memories

Did you know that Pulau Ubin once had its very own primary school? Established in 1952, Bin Kiang School also served as a vibrant centre for the local community.

At its peak, the school buzzed with as many as 400 students! It remains a symbol of a different era— when the island was filled with young families
As residents eventually moved to the mainland, enrolment fell, and the school closed in 1985. Yet, it remains in the fond memories of those who grew up on the island.

After the war, Singapore faced a major challenge: how to build schools while maximising land space. The solution? Multi-storey school designs under the 1947 Ten-Tear Programme!

By building upwards instead of outwards, schools were able to increase student enrolment and add more facilities like labs and workshops.
