One common misconception is that students score A for English because they know more vocabulary, read more books, or are naturally gifted.
While these factors help, they are rarely the deciding factor at the O-level examinations.
The real challenge in both Composition and Oral is dealing with unfamiliar topics under exam conditions.
Many students panic because they do not know what to say or write.
Our stronger students approach the paper differently.
Instead of relying on memorisation, they use a framework to break down the question, identify relevant angles, organise their ideas, and communicate them clearly.
However, a framework alone is not enough.
Students also need relevant content and examples that can be adapted across different topics.
When structure and content come together, students are able to tackle unfamiliar questions with much greater confidence.
I've shared the exact resource we use to teach this approach in the comments below.

We aim to inculcate a lifelong love for learning in our students. This is done by cultivating in our kids the desire and mindset to turn learning into action so as to develop them to become individuals who will achieve success within and beyond the classroom through the application of the right habits in life.
.
Most students struggle because schools teach concepts before context.
Would a 13โ14-year-old write a proposal in real life at this age or consider the pros and cons of preserving green spaces in society?
Probably never.
When we start with frameworks like ๐๐๐ or ๐๐๐๐, many students end up memorising without understanding purpose as ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐.
So, we need to begin with situations they already understand.
Imagine asking for more pocket money, a new phone, or an extension.
That is when the task becomes clear.
They need to provide reasons, substantiate, and address concerns.
At that point, students realise that they have been using these skills all along. The difference is that
When this happens, the format no longer becomes a chore to memorise but something that makes sense.
Once students understand where a skill exists in the real world and how to apply it, the magic happens.
This philosophy forms the foundation of how I teach and is also reflected in my book,

Then how are your children supposed to discuss current affairs, social issues and real-world problems during Oral and essay exams?

Really meh? Then why do so many students suddenly freeze, repeat points or drift off-topic once the Oral exam actually starts?
Many parents only realise this after Secondary school starts: students are expected to discuss ๐๐, ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐ก๐๐๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก, ๐ญ๐๐๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ and ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐๐ฌโฆ despite often having ๐ง๐จ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ซ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐ญ๐๐ฑ๐ญ๐๐จ๐จ๐ค.

By giving them clearer direction, content, and focus when communicating.
