📣 [Meet-A-Scientist] What is a Crab? – Identification Features and Illustrations 👩🏻🔬
SJINML is back with another round of Meet-A-Scientist! This year, we will also be having exclusive workshops for children aged 10 - 12 as part of our 10th anniversary celebrations! 🎉
🦀 Did you know that brachyuran crabs can be found in various habitats in Singapore, from freshwater to intertidal shores?
Join Dr Lee Bee Yan as she shares about the science behind describing, naming, and classifying crabs! Learn about the basic illustration methods of brachyuran crabs and examine their features under the microscope. 🔬

🌊 We were delighted to collaborate with the National Parks Board (NParks) for the Oil Spill Management Symposium: Building Knowledge, Bridging Stakeholders, held at Jurong Lake Gardens on 16–17 May.
🌎 The symposium brought together agencies, industry partners, researchers, and community stakeholders for important conversations on Singapore’s oil spill management practices and the longer-term impact of oil spills on our marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
🤝 From oil spill response and wildlife care to post-spill monitoring and recovery research, the sessions offered valuable insights into the many perspectives involved in managing such incidents. More importantly, the symposium underscored the importance of strong collaboration, clear communication, and effective prevention measures in enabling a swift and coordinated response.
🛳 As part of the programme, speakers from diverse backgrounds — including the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN), ITOPF, Singapore nature groups (Nature Society, FMP), the Straits Times, and researchers from WHOI, NUS and NTU, including our SJINML Resident Scientists — shared valuable insights into oil spill management.
We’re grateful to have been part of such a meaningful and insightful symposium, and to contribute to the ongoing conversation on protecting our marine environments. Thank you, NParks for having us on board! 🫶🏻

🌊 We were delighted to collaborate with the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore for a lecture under their Climate Transformation: Sustainable Societies Lecture Series, part of the Climate Transformation Programme.
🎙️ Titled “From Shoreline Practices to Shared Knowledge: A Digital Repository for Coastal Knowledge and Practice”, the lecture was held on 23 April 2026, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, at NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore.
🌏 The session explored how coastal communities and ecosystems are increasingly shaped by climate change and industrial development, while highlighting the importance of safeguarding local knowledge and practice. Drawing on collaborations across Singapore and Indonesia, it also underscored the role of shared platforms in connecting research, communities, and institutions.
🗣️ As part of the session, Senior Research Fellow and SJINML Resident Scientist Dr Ow Yan Xiang shared her scientific engagements with partners and communities in the region.
🙌🏼 We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of this meaningful programme and exchange.

👋🏼 Ahoy Mateys! We were delighted have a group of Biology and Geography teachers join us for another Fieldwork on Marine Ecosystems workshop on 22–23 April 2026.
🏝️ Conducted for the MOE Curriculum Planning & Development Division, teachers explored Singapore’s marine and coastal ecosystems through guided fieldwork over two enriching days — trying out distance and area sampling, sediment and water sampling, and measuring key abiotic parameters.
🪸 Back in the classroom, our resident scientists and guest speakers shared insights on coral reef ecosystems, restoration efforts, blue carbon dynamics, and the important role of seagrasses.
🧪 Participants also rolled up their sleeves for hands-on sessions: Corals as a Model for Climate Resilience and Prediction and Biotic and Abiotic Parameters in Seawater.
💬 We wrapped up with a lively scenario discussion on land and sea space use around the St. John’s Island-Complex, followed by reflections on how marine science can be brought into secondary school Biology and Geography classrooms.
We’re so glad everyone had a meaningful time, and we hope these experiences continue to inspire learning back in the classroom! 🌊📚
