New cohort, big ambitions! 🎓✨

Last week, we opened our doors to the incoming cohort of Bachelor of Technology in Engineering and Bachelor of Information Technology students!

Orientation was filled with inspirational moments, tips for student wellness, and for navigating campus life. Students also had the opportunity to dive into their respective disciplines with faculty members and connect directly with our strong alumni community. It was a wonderful start for our learners to gain insights into their academic paths and build support networks from Day 1.

🎉Congratulations once again to the NUS SCALE Class of 2026! We are happy to celebrate this momentous occasion alongside our graduates and their loved ones.

Among the many special moments, it was heartwarming listening to our valedictorians, Ng Xi Min and Marcus Lo, recount their time in their programmes with their peers.

This year, we also celebrated our first Lye Thim Fatt Award winners, Kavya Tripathi and Alexis Lin, with Emeritus Professor Lye Lin Heng, who established this prize in honour of her late father, a pioneer in multi-disciplinary education at NUS.

While Commencement 2026 may have come to an end, it marks the start of an exciting new chapter for our graduates and we can’t wait to see them take their next steps and put their knowledge into action!

The NUS Commencement 2026 season has officially begun! 🎓

We are honoured that the ceremonies have kicked off with our SCALE graduates taking the stage first. These students embody the very spirit of lifelong learning—demonstrating that education is a continuous journey of growth, impact, and transformation.

1️⃣ Ng Xi Min — MSc (Environmental Management): NUS alumna, former NUS research assistant and this year’s Valedictorian, Xi Min is set to drive environmental impact, leveraging her rich research experience in building-integrated photovoltaics, food security and built carbon emissions.

2️⃣ Darren Eric Sze — MSc (Environmental Management): A Polytechnic Lecturer in Hospitality and Tourism Management, Darren aims to integrate sustainability into his curriculum, preparing the next generation of industry leaders for a greener economy.

3️⃣ Thiam Wan Xie — MSc (Artificial Intelligence & Innovation): Combining her Mathematical Sciences background with e-commerce marketing experience, Wan Xie has further expanded her skillset by mastering AI — and is now ready to make her mark on the AI landscape.

4️⃣ Dylan Lee Wee Jin — MSc (Smart Industries and Digital Transformation): A Biotechnologist turned Digital Transformation Champion, Dylan is ready to help large organisations navigate technological disruption and optimise production through smart industry solutions.

5️⃣ Yan Liping (Jacky) — MSc (Venture Creation): A seasoned entrepreneur and Class Champion of her cohort, Liping leveraged her postgraduate journey to drive real change, spearheading a major fundraising initiative that successfully secured bursaries to support fellow postgraduate students.

In the 𝐍𝐔𝐒 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 (𝐃𝐒𝐅𝐏), purpose is meant to be lived out through action, not treated as an abstract idea.

As part of the programme’s 13-week curriculum, all Fellows undertake a compulsory impact team project designed to bring the PEACH pillars of 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 and 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 to life. Through stakeholder engagement, field research and collaboration, Fellows explore real societal challenges and present their capstone proposals at the end of the programme.

One of these projects, 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭, explored how Singapore could strengthen demand for local produce and food resilience. The team’s early idea of “Silver Farmers in Schools” later inspired a real-world intergenerational farming pilot by Grobrix and Bukit View Primary School that was featured on CNA.

Another project is 𝐅-𝐅𝐈𝐓, a voice-based AI financial health screening prototype helping Singaporeans above 50 years old assess retirement resilience in a trusted and accessible way.

These projects reflect the impact that can be created when experienced leaders are given the space to rethink contribution, apply their experience differently, and collaborate across disciplines in service of society.

We all know that getting sufficient sleep is important. But how important, exactly?

In this month’s 𝐍𝐔𝐒 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 (𝐃𝐒𝐅𝐏) lecture preview for senior leaders keen in the programme, Professor Michael Chee from NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine stressed the importance of good sleep and its intrinsic link to health outcomes and well-being.

Beyond the behavioral and physiological aspects of sleep, he also drew our attention to the cultural differences in sleep patterns, offering a global view on longevity.

Prof Chee lends a cutting perspective into how something as granular as one’s daily sleep has a multi-fold impact on one’s ability to thrive in the 100-year life.
