How do governments tackle misinformation in the digital age?
GCIT students attended a thought-provoking lecture by Prof. Natalie Pang at NUS, where she explored how Singapore addresses misinformation and disinformation through laws like the Broadcasting Act and POFMA. Students compared global strategies, including those from Germany, France, and Taiwan, and discussed the role of civil society in media literacy. A practical highlight was learning about the S.U.R.E. campaign during our visit to the National Library of Singapore!

What’s special about co-production in the media industry, and how do all the things work together for cultural diplomacy?
Dr. Soh Kai Ruo shared her observations on film co-production, providing various cases for analysis and discussing the pros and cons of cultural diplomacy. During the lecture, GCIT students brainstormed scenarios for encountering unfamiliar cultures and navigating situations using cultural intelligence. By watching Ajoomma (Shuming He, 2022), students got ideas of how co-production fits into the Singapore film industry.

– Fourth Stop, SPH Media 🇸🇬
[Team 4As]
GCIT students visited Singapore’s SPH Media and Ochre Pictures on April 2 to explore innovation and content production in the local media industry. At SPH Media, one of Singapore’s largest media groups, students toured the multilingual media ecosystem and cutting-edge Studio+65, where they observed live studio productions, podcast recordings, green screen work, and radio broadcasting at stations like Kiss92FM and ONE FM 91.3. The visit highlighted SPH’s digital transformation and its push to involve youth through platforms like YouTube and TikTok under the motto "Learn, Unlearn, Relearn." At Ochre Pictures, an independent production company behind series and documentaries for Mediacorp and HBO Asia, students gained insights into storytelling, post-production, and how AI tools are integrated into editing workflows. The company also emphasizes nurturing young talent while keeping human creativity at the heart of its content. This experience offered GCIT students a dynamic view into Singapore’s evolving media landscape and the future of interdisciplinary media practices.

✨ – Fourth Stop: Seminar at the National University of Singapore 🇸🇬🎓
[Team Avocado]🥑
GCIT Explorer participated in the seminar titled “Creative Economy in Asia: The case for television and media content production”, conducted by Dr. Jinna Tay, senior lecturer of Communications and New Media in NUS.
The students learned the concept of creative economy, and were impressed by the fact that Singapore was among the first and very fast adopters of this idea in the 1990s. Since then, Singapore has become one of the leaders in the global creative economy.
“I’m fascinated how Singapore could make so many creative products compared with other countries, given its small size and young history”, said Helen Lo, a GCIT student.
Along with the focus on creative economy, Singapore also prioritizes social values and cultural norms, insisting those ideas are the keys to Singaporean media development and programming.
Thanks to the seminar, GCIT students not only understand the creative economy but also gain insights from one of the most successful models. This helps them apply the concept in their future careers and in their own environments.

“It was so fun to actually experience these new technologies in such a creative way—we had lots of fun!” shared Alex Wu, a GCIT student.
In this workshop, students explored how immersive technologies like VR and AR are applied in cultural studies and had the chance to develop their own experiences using widely available platforms. The session was conducted in collaboration with the NUS Libraries’ Digital Scholarship team.
