If your 6-year-old is still guessing words, this is important.

Many children don’t struggle because they “can’t read.”
They struggle because they were never taught to blend properly.

Blending is the ability to connect sounds smoothly:
sh – i – p → ship
gr – i – n → grin

When blending is weak, children:

Guess from the first letter

Rely on pictures

Memorise instead of decode

Avoid unfamiliar words

Try the quick test in this post.

If your child hesitates on ship, grin, stop, blending may need strengthening.

Strong blending =

Many parents believe that once their child can sing the 𝗔𝗕𝗖 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴, they’re already ready to read. But is that really how reading works? 🤔

The truth is… 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.

In phonics, children learn that each letter represents a 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱.
When they understand the sounds and how to blend them together, reading starts to make sense.

For example:
🔤 𝗰 says /k/
🔤 𝗮 says /a/
🔤 𝘁 says /t/

Blend the sounds together:
👉 /k/ + /a/ + /t/ = 𝗰𝗮𝘁

That’s the foundation of phonics — helping children connect 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 so they can confidently read new words on their own. 📚✨

If your child can sing the ABC song, that’s a great start!
