In his post, Minister K Shanmugam Sc shared about an upper secondary Social Studies lesson at Riverside that he observed and participated in.

During the lesson, students engaged thoughtfully on the issue of terrorism in a globalised, tech-driven world. Through these discussions, they demonstrated strong critical thinking and collaboration skills, reflecting our commitment to nurturing informed and resilient youths for a more cohesive and vigilant Singapore. 🇸🇬

Just like our upper secondary students, let's always be curious and engaged while staying alert and making a difference! 🫡

Minister K Shanmugam shared about the Total Defence Day Character & Citizenship Education (CCE) lesson that he joined us for!

During the lesson, our Riversidians were guided through a discussion about how they, their family members, and others might be affected if there were to be a prolonged disruption to digital connectivity. Building on one another’s sharing, students articulated ways in which Singapore, as a nation, could be prepared for such disruptions. The lesson concluded with an apt sharing by Minister Shanmugam and Minister Desmond Lee, reminding us of the need to stay vigilant and not take our peace for granted. 💪

Let’s continue reflecting on the importance of Total Defence Day as we remain prepared for any kinds of disruptions!

Our sixth Riverside Model United Nations (RSMUN)—based on the theme “Progress Through Adaptation: Together as One Singapore”—concluded successfully! 🇸🇬

Led by our RSMUN council chairs, student delegates from our school and other primary and secondary schools engaged in critical discussions on pressing national issues, ranging from our ageing population and climate change to AI and education. Their insightful debates embodied what it means to build a We-First Society. 💪

During the opening ceremony, we were honoured to have Mr Ganesh Kumar, Chairman of Woodlands Botanical Gardens and Singaporean of the Year finalist, address our delegates followed by a panel discussion. The panel, which featured our Principal Ms Tham, RSMUN Secretary-General Muhamad Danial Adnan, and was moderated by Mr Joel Lee, explored the importance of biodiversity and environmental conservation. 🌸🌳

The conference concluded with a closing ceremony recognising outstanding delegates for their contributions to these vital conversations about Singapore’s future. 💬

Thank you to all our guests, teachers, alumni, and delegates for making RSMUN 2026 an inspiring learning experience! 🏆

Today, we celebrate a truly special member of the Riverside family — Mdm Robiah Karim, our beloved canteen stallholder of Stall 7 (“Nasi Delight”), who has served our school faithfully for 31 years (1995–2026). 🏫

For over three decades, Mdm Robiah has nourished generations of Riversidians — including four of her own children and her grandson. Her stall has been more than just a source of our daily meals; it has been a space of warmth, familiarity, and care. 💗

We are deeply grateful for her dedication and commitment to our community. Thank you, Mdm Robiah, for 31 wonderful years of service. Here’s wishing you a happy and most well‑deserved retirement — you will be dearly missed. 🥲

As we mark Chap Goh Mei — the fifteenth day of the lunar month that signals the end of Chinese New Year celebrations — we’re reminded of the importance of care and togetherness! 🧧

Last Saturday, our students joined hands with Evergreen Secondary School to distribute CNY hampers to Woodlands residents as part of Project Care from the Heart, an initiative by the Woodlands Zone ‘4’ Residents’ Network.

Seeing our Riversidians bring smiles to residents’ faces through acts of service was most heartwarming: it was truly a meaningful way to conclude the festive season — by giving back to the community and strengthening our shared bonds! ❤️

Thank you Minister Desmond Lee for visiting Riverside Secondary School. As Minister Lee reminded us, Total Defence is everyone's responsibility - not just our security agencies, but each and every one of us. Thank you for this meaningful learning experience for our Riverside family.

This Year of the Horse, the theme of our CNY celebrations was ”Gallop with Dreams, Grow with Purpose“ / 《策马追梦,向学而行》. 🐎 Our school was bustling with festivities today as students and staff welcomed the Lunar New Year!🍊🍊

After cheers and well wishes during the mass lohei session, our Riversidians learnt a range of traditional crafts, ranging from paper cutting to knot tying and bean art. True to our Riverside spirit, students and staff also prepared gift hampers for members of the community, strengthening our bonds while cultivating values of compassion, gratitude, and generosity. 🧧

The day’s celebrations concluded with energetic performances at the school hall, including a rousing lion dance! 🦁

Here’s wishing everyone an auspicious and joyous Year of the Horse ahead! 🧧🍊🍊🎋

Today we commemorated Total Defence Day at RSS! 🇸🇬

We were honoured to host Minister K Shanmugam Sc and Minister Desmond Lee. Through their meaningful interactions with our students and the valuable insights they shared, we were reminded that every individual has a responsibility to play their part in Singapore’s defence.

Our Uniformed Groups also showcased the six pillars of Total Defence through interactive booths at the hall, with upper secondary cadets facilitating engaging hands-on activities for juniors. They highlighted the importance of community resilience in times of crisis, and how Total Defence applies to everyday life.

Earlier this week, we further simulated power outages as part of Exercise SG Ready 2026, testing our adaptability when lessons continued without electricity. No disruptions can stop our learning!

These experiences highlighted the importance of preparing our youth to face future challenges with confidence, as part of a united community committed to Singapore’s security and prosperity. 💪

Riverside Secondary School

From 1987 to 1996

Riverside Secondary School had its humble beginnings in 1987 at Fuchun Secondary School under the charge of its principal, Mrs Ngiam Geak Kim. There were nine teachers and two non-academic staff members with the first batch of Secondary One students.

Mr O. J. Balasingam was its pioneer principal when Riverside Secondary moved into its present premises at 3, Woodlands Street 81 on 21 December 1987. It began operations on 4 January 1988. At that time, it was the third school built under Phase Two of the S100 Secondary School Type; it had the most modern facilities, including an underground rifle range, and air-conditioned library and self-study facilities. The school was officially opened by Mr Lee Yiok Seng, MP for Bukit Panjang on 14th July 1990.

Mr Balasingam led the staff to craft the school motto, design the school crest and uniform and raise funds through walkathons to build a conducive learning environment. Our school song was co-written by him.
