Meet Sophia Lai, SP Institutional Medallist and Tan Kay Yong Gold Medallist from the Diploma in Media, Arts & Design (DMAD)!
For Sophia, art is more than just a vibe-it’s a bridge.
Coming from a family of filmmakers and calligraphers, she’s always known that storytelling can change lives.
That’s why she joined the pioneer batch of SP’s Diploma in Media, Arts & Design (DMAD) to merge her love for creativity with psychology!
It wasn’t always easy. Sophia candidly shares her journey with burnout in secondary school, and by seeking help, she turned that personal growth into a mission to help her peers as Co-President of the MAD Peer Supporters. Her impact has been massive, from winning a S$5,000 Young ChangeMakers Grant for her “Mind the Gap” exhibition at Tampines MRT to using art therapy to help youth in Phnom Penh navigate their emotions.
Whether she’s co-creating murals at Bugis MRT with children from AWWA School or hosting “Good Riddance” pre-loved clothing swaps on campus, Sophia is creating safe spaces wherever she goes. Next stop?
Social Work at NUS! All the best, SOPHIA! 💪💪💪

Meet Joylyn Wong, SP Institutional Medallist and a recipient of the Low Guan Onn Gold Medal!
A Commonwealth Secondary School alumna, Joylyn’s journey at Singapore Polytechnic has been defined by a desire to look beyond aesthetics and focus on design that improves everyday life. Her commitment to user-centered research and systems thinking has already led to incredible real-world impact.
Joylyn was a driving force behind “Letsplore,” a community-focused mobile application that secured
S$12,500 in funding through the NYC Youth Action Challenge. Beyond her technical projects, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership as the Secretary of the Media, Arts & Design School Club (MADC), where she managed complex logistics for major student events and learned to lead her team through periods of uncertainty.
During her 22-week internship at Enterprise Singapore, Joylyn applied her skills at scale, helping SMEs navigate government digital tools. Her heart for the community also shines through her volunteer work for elderly homes and underprivileged children, as well as her research into “ageing-in-place” solutions for Singapore’s seniors.
Joylyn plans to further her studies in the social sciences to ensure her future design solutions remain practical, inclusive, and genuinely human-centered. CONGRATULATIONS, Joylyn! 🙌
